Chapter 2 - ELEVEN DAYS OF MADNESS

For eleven days, the East Coast underworld went dark.
Lorenzo DeSantis turned the tri-state area into a police state governed by criminals. Construction sites ground to a halt. Port shipments sat unread on docks. Freight trucks sat idle. Lorenzo wasn’t running his empire; he was hunting a ghost.
He raided rival territory, suspecting the Moretti crime family had kidnapped her. He interrogated every contact in her address book. He dragged her estranged mother out of her Connecticut home at three in the morning, only to find the woman genuinely clueless and terrified.
By day seven, Lorenzo hadn’t slept more than two hours a night. He sat in his massive study at the estate, surrounded by empty glasses, unread intelligence reports, and a growing mountain of dark paranoia.
On the eleventh morning, Marco entered the estate’s study. His eyes were sunken, dark circles heavy beneath them. He carried a small, clear evidence bag.
“Did you find her?” Lorenzo demanded, springing up from his chair, his suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled.
“No, Boss,” Marco said quietly. “But we swept the penthouse again with a forensic team. We checked the security footage from the hallway on the floor below your private office from the day she vanished.”
Lorenzo frowned. “And?”
“She was there, Lorenzo,” Marco’s voice was barely a whisper. He placed the clear plastic bag on the desk. “She came up the private elevator at 10:14 AM on your anniversary. She was carrying this.”
Lorenzo looked down at the plastic bag.
Inside was a crushed brown paper bag. Inside the paper bag sat a cream-colored envelope stained with oil from the trash bin, and two impossibly tiny, pristine white baby shoes.
Lorenzo’s breathing stopped completely. His mind went blank, freezing in time.
Slowly, with hands that had pulled triggers without trembling, hands that had signed death warrants without a second thought, Lorenzo reached into the evidence bag. He pulled out the cream envelope.
He unsealed it.
Inside was a high-resolution ultrasound image dated twelve days prior. At the bottom, in neat clinical print, were the words: DeSantis, Isabella – Gestational Age: 6 Weeks.
Attached to the back was a small sticky note in Isabella’s elegant cursive handwriting:
Happy 2nd Anniversary, Lorenzo. Meet your heir.
Lorenzo fell back into his leather chair as if he had been shot through the heart.
The timestamp on the security video ran through his mind like a horrific death loop.
10:14 AM.
That was the exact moment Vanessa had been standing in his office. The exact moment Vanessa had asked, “What is she to you, really?”
The exact moment Lorenzo had laughed and said: “A perfect mafia wife. Quiet, grateful, and completely in the dark.”
The brown paper bag had fallen from her hands right outside his open door. She had heard every single word. She had watched him kiss another woman while holding the tiny shoes of his unborn child.
A raw, agonizing sound ripped from Lorenzo’s throat—a howl of pure, unadulterated agony that echoed through the vast, empty halls of the DeSantis mansion.
He covered his face with his hands, tears finally breaking through his hard exterior, soaking into his sleeves.
“She wasn't just leaving me,” Lorenzo sobbed, his voice cracking violently. “I drove her away... with my child.”
Marco stood in solemn silence, unable to offer a single word of comfort.
Lorenzo looked up, his eyes bloodshot, wild with a terrifying new madness. The arrogant, cold mafia king was gone. In his place was a desperate, broken man who realized he had traded his soul for cheap poison.
“Marco,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice trembling violently. “Forget the business. Forget the syndicate. Tell thecapos we are at war with anyone who hides her. I don't care if it costs every dollar I own. I don't care if I burn this entire city to the ground.”

He squeezed the tiny white shoes in his fist, crushing them against his chest.
“Find my wife and my baby.”
