Chapter 2 - THE VAULT OF THE SEVEN DUSTSThe bulletproof glass on Mateo’s armored Maybach hummed as it cut through the rain-slicked streets of Lower Manhattan at two in the morning.

Behind them, the top floors of the Reyes Penthouse were enveloped in flickering orange flames and flashing red police lights.
Elise sat huddled in the leather backseat, her evening gown torn at the hem, her hands shivering uncontrollably despite the heated seats. Mateo sat beside her, his white dress shirt stained with soot and a faint smear of blood along his jaw where a glass shard had grazed him.
"Where are you taking me?" she demanded, clutching her father's letter to her chest.
"Somewhere your father spent thirty years of his life," Mateo replied, reloading a spare magazine with practiced, rhythmic precision. "The Central Archival Vault beneath the Brooklyn Public Library."
Elise blinked. "The library? It's closed! It's been under renovation for eighteen months!"
"It’s not under renovation," Mateo said coldly. "It’s under quarantine. Your father locked the subterranean vault before he died. The Bratva has been trying to blow the titanium door for three weeks without triggering the thermite auto-destruct sequence. They failed because they didn't have the signet ring."
He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently reaching into her neckline.
Elise stiffened, but she didn't pull away as his knuckles brushed against the sensitive skin of her collarbone, hooking the platinum chain and lifting her father’s silver ring into the ambient dashboard light.
"The ring contains a micro-engraved cryptographic key," Mateo explained, his voice dropping to a low, husky register. "Combined with my family’s master bypass code, it unlocks the Seven Dusts ledger."
"And what happens once we have this ledger?" Elise asked, looking directly into his intense hazel eyes. "You use it to destroy your enemies? You become the undisputed King of New York?"
"I use it to clear your father’s name," Mateo said smoothly. "And then I make sure no one ever comes after you again."
"Why do you care about my father?" she whispered. "He was an archivist. You're a mob boss."
Mateo’s jaw tightened. For a fraction of a second, the cold mask of the Don slipped, revealing a deep, shadowy pain hidden beneath.
"Marcus Caldwell didn't just work for my family," Mateo murmured, looking out the rain-streaked window. "He saved my life when I was twelve years old. When my uncle tried to poison me to take the throne, Marcus hid me in the library vaults for three weeks. I owed him a life debt. And Don Mateo Reyes always pays his debts."
The Maybach pulled into the dark, abandoned loading bay beneath the Brooklyn Library.
Before the driver could open the door, Marco turned around from the front passenger seat, his face white.
"Boss... radar just picked up four unmarked SUVs closing in on our tail. They cut off the bridge exits."
Mateo clicked his safety off.
"They were waiting for us," Elise realized, her blood running cold. "Volkov knew we would go for the ledger!"
"Volkov didn't guess," Mateo growled, his eyes darkening into pure obsidian. "Someone inside my inner circle told him."

He grabbed Elise’s hand, pulling her out of the vehicle as heavy automatic gunfire began to rain down upon the armored roof of the Maybach.
"Run!" Mateo shouted.
