Chapter 3 - THE BLOOD IN THE KEYSThe air inside the subterranean library vault was cool, heavy, and smelled of old parchment, ozone, and copper.

Massive iron shelves stretched twenty feet into the darkness, containing thousands of forgotten city maps, historical deeds, and confidential municipality records dating back to the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam.

At the end of the main stone aisle stood a massive, circular titanium vault door—an industrial monstrosity built into the bedrock of the city.

Outside the vault, the heavy steel security doors of the library were buckled and warping under the explosive charges Volkov’s men were setting.

BOOM!

The dust shook down from the concrete ceiling like grey snow.

"We have two minutes before they break through!" Marco shouted, setting up a defensive barricade behind a pair of marble pillars with three loyalist soldiers.

Mateo pulled Elise to the central control panel beside the titanium door. A brass-rimmed mechanical lock sat beneath a digital fingerprint scanner.

"The ring," Mateo commanded.

Elise unclasped the chain with trembling fingers, handing the silver signet ring to Mateo.

Mateo placed the ring into the central brass keyhole and turned it 180 degrees counter-clockwise.

CLICK. WHIRRRRR.

The mechanical tumbler spun, and the digital scanner flared to life with a bright red laser beam.

"Now," Mateo said, grabbing his tactical blade from his belt. Before Elise could react, he drew the blade across his own palm, letting dark red blood pool in his hand. He pressed his bloody palm flat against the scanner plate.

BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION CONFIRMED: REYES LINEAGE. ENTER SECONDARY BIOMETRIC KEY.

"Elise," Mateo said, turning to her. "Your turn."

"My blood?" she gasped.

"Your father coded the lock to his bloodline. It has to be you."

Elise looked at the door, then at the heavy steel entrance where the gun battle was growing louder. She took the blade from Mateo’s hand, closed her eyes, and sliced a small line across her thumb.

She pressed her thumb against the glass reader.

BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION CONFIRMED: CALDWELL LINEAGE. VAULT UNLOCKED.

With a deafening hiss of released pneumatic pressure, the heavy titanium vault door swung open, revealing a small, brightly lit inner sanctuary.

In the center of the room, resting on a velvet pedestal, was a thick, black leather ledger secured by iron bands.

Elise rushed inside, reaching for the book that had cost her father his life.

"Don't touch it!" Mateo barked.

Elise froze, her hand hovering inches from the leather cover.

Mateo stepped up beside her, his sharp eyes examining the pedestal. Beneath the velvet fabric, a tiny optical laser beam was reflecting off a mirrored sensor.

"Pressure-sensitive tripwire," Mateo muttered. "If you pick up the ledger without the equal weight replacement, the entire room floods with cyanide gas."

Before he could calculate the weight, a cold, mocking voice echoed from the vault entrance.

"Ingenious," the voice purred with a thick Russian accent. "Marcus Caldwell really was a clever little rat."

Elise turned around.

Standing in the vault doorway, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at Mateo’s heart, was Viktor Volkov.

And standing right behind Volkov... was Marco.
