Chapter 5 - THE UNSEALED TRUTHBy 5:00 AM, they were in a secure, subterranean safehouse beneath an abandoned brownstone in Brooklyn Heights.

The safehouse was warm, lined with exposed brick, illuminated by soft amber lamps.

Elise had changed out of her ruined gown into one of Mateo’s dark grey cashmere sweaters and a pair of drawstring pants. The sweater was far too big for her, draping over her soft shoulders, smelling faintly of his expensive cologne.

Mateo sat across from her at a long oak table, a glass of dark amber bourbon in his hand, a medical kit open beside him. He had stripped off his dress shirt, revealing a broad, muscular chest covered in dark tattoos and silver bullet scars.

Elise sat beside him with a needle and thread, carefully stitching a deep four-inch cut along his left shoulder.

"Hold still," she whispered, her fingers gentle despite her fatigue.

"You have soft hands for someone who just trapped two men in a titanium vault," Mateo murmured, his hazel eyes fixed on her face.

"I spent five years handling two-hundred-year-old manuscripts," she smiled softly, tying off the knot and cutting the thread with surgical scissors. "You learn to be precise."

Mateo looked down at the black leather ledger resting in the middle of the table.

"Open it," Mateo said. "You earned the right."

Elise wiped her hands, turning to the heavy leather book. She unclasped the iron band and opened the thick, yellowed pages.

Inside were thousands of names, dates, bank account numbers, and blackmail dossiers detailing thirty years of corruption across the highest levels of American power.

Senators. Federal judges. Police commissioners.

And then, on page 142, Elise’s breath hitched.

Her father’s name was listed at the bottom of a ledger entry dated four years ago:

MARCUS CALDWELL — TERMINATION AUTHORIZATION APPROVED.

Elise’s blood ran cold. Her eyes scanned up the page to read the name of the man who had ordered her father’s hit-and-run death.

It wasn't Viktor Volkov. It wasn't the Commission.

It was signed with a personal seal:

DON ANTONIO REYES — CHAIRMAN OF THE REYES FOUNDATION.

Elise dropped the book, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor.

She backed away, staring at Mateo in absolute horror.

"Your father..." Elise gasped, her voice choking on tears. "Your father killed my dad!"

Mateo didn't move. He sat in his chair, looking at the entry on page 142. His face didn't show shock—it showed a deep, unbearable, agonizing sorrow.

"I know," Mateo whispered softly.

"You knew?!" Elise shrieked, tears spilling over her cheeks. "You brought me here, pretended to protect me, kissed me in front of the world—when your own family murdered my father?!"

"My father ordered the hit four years ago because Marcus refused to give him the ledger," Mateo said, standing up slowly, his voice shaking with raw emotion. "And twelve hours after my father signed that order... I killed my father."

Elise froze, her hands pressed against her mouth.

May you like

"What?" she breathed.

"My father didn't die of a heart attack, Elise," Mateo revealed, stepping toward her, his eyes burning with tears he refused to shed. "When I found out he had ordered the execution of the man who saved my life... I put a pillow over Don Antonio’s face in his hospital bed. I took the crown so I could fix what he broke."
