Chapter 3 - THE HUNTED BECOMES THE HUNTERWithin four hours of his release, Ethan launched a full-scale media war.

By nightfall, local news outlets were broadcasting an "exclusive interview" with Margaret Cole outside her pristine Greenwich estate. Wearing a black dress and wiping away forced tears, she stood before a sea of microphones.
"Our family is heartbroken," Margaret declared to the cameras, her voice trembling with perfected grief. "Claire has been struggling with severe postpartum psychosis prior to delivery. She staged those bruises herself during a manic episode to prevent my son from getting her the medical help she desperately needs. Now her father—a rogue former military officer—has taken her into hiding. We are terrified for the safety of my grandchild."
The narrative was suffocatingly fast. Social media blew up. Photos of Ethan in his crisp military uniform looking lovingly at me during our wedding were juxtaposed against leaked, edited audio clips where I sounded screaming and incoherent—clips Ethan had pieced together from months of secretly recording me while he provoked panic attacks.
"They're turning the entire public against us," I said, staring at the television screen in the safehouse my father had secured in rural Virginia.
"Let them talk," my father said calmly, cleaning his service pistol at the kitchen table. "In military strategy, when the enemy overextends their front line to win a public relations victory, they leave their rear flank entirely exposed."
"What does that mean, Dad?"
"It means Ethan is so busy playing the victim on television that he isn't watching his financial accounts," my father replied, handing me a secure laptop. "Log in to your mother's private trust portal. The one you accessed two weeks ago."
My fingers flew across the keyboard. When the screen loaded, my jaw dropped.
A red alert banner was flashing across the screen: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS ATTEMPT - WIRE TRANSFER PENDING: $12,500,000.
"Ethan is trying to drain the land trust right now," I breathed. "He’s transferring the money to an offshore account in Zurich!"
"He can't complete the transfer without a secondary biometric authentication," my father explained, leaning over my shoulder. "Your mother set it up so that only your thumbprint and retina scan could release funds over one million dollars. Ethan knows he's running out of time. The bail was a desperate move to force you out into the open."
Suddenly, the lights in the safehouse flickered once, twice, and went completely black.
The quiet hum of the refrigerator died. Outside, the night insects fell instantly silent.
My father was on his feet in a fraction of a second, his hand sweeping his sidearm from the table. "Claire. Get under the basement hatch. Now."

"Dad—"
"He didn't use police trackers to find us," my father whispered into the darkness, his eyes fixed on the front window as the faint silhouette of two men holding suppressed firearms stepped onto the porch. "Ethan used his active military tactical team. He’s gone rogue."
