Chapter 1 - The Red Velvet Box Opens

Zia’s small fingers traced the gold latch of the red velvet box while the dining room fell into a suffocating, unnatural silence. Lorraine stood frozen behind the serving platter of cinnamon rolls, her manicured hand hovering mid-air above a silver tongs. The word Guest stared up from the white place card like an accusation, mocking the festive pine garland and the cheerful Christmas music still humming from the kitchen speakers.

"What is the meaning of this?" Lorraine’s voice cut through the quiet, sharp as cut glass. Her gaze shifted from the small velvet container in her granddaughter’s hands to Travis, who stood like a stone wall directly behind Zia.

"It’s a gift, Grandma," Zia said, her voice small but remarkably steady. She remembered her father’s words from the night before. She gets to choose how she treats you. She does not get to choose whether you belong.

Travis stepped forward, his shoes clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. He didn’t raise his voice, but the absolute coldness in his tone made his aunts and uncles shrink back into their chairs. "Open it, Mom. You’ve spent years making sure everyone at this table knows who is 'family' and who is merely passing through. Consider this your final lesson in property management."

Lorraine’s chest rose and fell rapidly. She looked around the table for allies, but her siblings—Aunt Melissa and Uncle Ray—were suddenly intensely interested in the patterns of their coffee cups. With trembling fingers, Lorraine stepped around the table, reached out, and snapped open the velvet lid.

Inside rested a single, heavy brass key, attached to a folded legal document stamped with a notary’s seal.

Lorraine picked up the paper, her eyes scanning the bold header. As the realization hit her, the color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking ancient under the warm holiday lights.

"This... this is impossible," Lorraine whispered, her knees buckling slightly as she gripped the edge of the mahogany table. "The estate... the trust... it’s all mine. Everything is tied to this house!"

"Not anymore," Travis said quietly, pulling Zia close to his side. "Welcome to your new status, Mother. According to the updated deed, you are no longer the owner of this estate. You are officially our guest."
