CHAPTER 5 – Richard's Forgotten Crime... And the Recording That Changed Everything

The courtroom fell into complete silence.

Every camera turned toward Richard Sterling.

His face had gone completely white.

"I... I don't understand," he whispered.

"There has to be a mistake."

The letter claimed Richard had signed the authorization that sent Michael to the psychiatric hospital.

Reporters immediately rushed outside.

Within minutes, every news channel carried the same headline.

"Billionaire May Have Betrayed His Own Brother."

Richard was suspended as CEO.

Sterling Foods lost billions in market value overnight.

Even Ethan couldn't believe it.

The man who had saved his family...

couldn't also be the man who destroyed it.

Could he?

That evening, Michael quietly asked to speak with Richard alone.

"I need to know one thing."

"Did you really do it?"

Richard stared at the floor for a long time before answering.

"I remember signing something..."

"They told me you had suffered a mental breakdown after the accident."

"They said it was temporary."

"I believed them."

Michael shook his head.

"There was no accident."

"I begged them to let me call you."

"They said... you were the one who wanted me gone."

Richard collapsed into tears.

For decades, he had lived with a memory that wasn't real.

Someone had manipulated him.

The next morning, Ethan searched through the old metal box again.

Hidden beneath the false documents was a tiny cassette tape wrapped in yellowed newspaper.

On the label, written in faded ink, were five chilling words:

"If I disappear... play this."

A retired detective found an old tape recorder.

Everyone gathered in Michael's hospital room.

The tape crackled to life.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

It was Evelyn.

"You'll sign these papers, Richard."

"If you don't... your brother dies tonight."

Another voice answered.

Richard's.

His voice was shaking.

"No... please... don't hurt him."

Then Evelyn laughed.

Cold.

Calm.

Victorious.

"You won't remember any of this."

"My doctor will make sure of that."

The room froze.

Richard hadn't betrayed Michael.

He had been drugged, manipulated, and blackmailed into signing documents he barely understood.

For thirty-two years...

He had carried the guilt for a crime he never knowingly committed.

But the recording wasn't finished.

A third voice suddenly spoke.

Deep.

Confident.

Male.

"I've prepared the new identity."

"The patient will disappear forever."

Everyone looked at each other in shock.

Michael slowly closed his eyes.

"I know that voice..."

Richard's hands began trembling.

"So do I."

It wasn't a doctor.

It wasn't a lawyer.

It wasn't a politician.

It belonged to the one person everyone trusted more than anyone else...

Richard and Michael's own father.

The founder of the Sterling empire hadn't been protecting the family...

He had been the one secretly controlling it all from the very beginning.

And according to the timestamp on the tape...

Someone using his private security code had entered the Sterling headquarters...

Just two days ago.
