CHAPTER 5 – THE JANITOR'S KEY OPENED A DOOR NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE

The old janitor disappeared before anyone noticed.
But the boy did.
Something about the man's trembling hands... and the rusted brass key hanging from his pocket... felt strangely familiar.
The next morning, he returned to the theater alone.
The stage was empty.
Only the janitor was there, quietly sweeping the floor.
"You were waiting for me," the boy said.
The old man smiled sadly.
"I've been waiting for twelve years."
Without another word, he handed the boy the brass key.
"It opens Locker 27... in the basement of Saint Mary's Hospital."
"Don't tell anyone you're going."
"Especially your father."
The warning sent a chill through the boy.
That afternoon, he and the young ballerina secretly traveled to the abandoned hospital.
Most of the building had already been demolished.
Only the basement remained.
Dust covered every wall.
Broken wheelchairs lined the dark hallway.
Finally...
They found Locker 27.
The old brass key fit perfectly.
Click.
Inside was a faded cardboard box.
Not money.
Not jewelry.
Just dozens of patient files.
Hundreds of photographs.
And a cassette tape labeled...
"If you're my son... please forgive me."
The boy's hands shook as he pressed Play.
A woman's voice filled the silent basement.
"My sweet boy..."
"If you're hearing this, it means the truth has finally found you."
"I wasn't your mother..."
"I was your nurse."
The boy's heart nearly stopped.
"I was forced to lie."
"The hospital director was selling newborn babies to wealthy families."
"When I tried to expose him... he threatened to kill every child still in the maternity ward."
"So I ran."
"I took you with me."
"I knew I'd never survive..."
"But I hoped one day someone would discover this recording."
Tears streamed down the boy's face.
The woman who had raised him...
The woman he had called "Mom"...
Had never stolen him.
She had saved him.
Then the ballerina pulled another envelope from the bottom of the box.
Inside were names.
Dates.
Bank transfers.
And one signature.
The audience would never believe it.
The person who financed the entire baby-selling operation...
Wasn't the hospital director.
It wasn't a doctor.
It wasn't a politician.
It was the chairman of the orphanage where the boy had grown up.
The very man everyone called "Father Michael."
The man who had hugged him after every birthday...
The man who claimed to love every abandoned child...
Had been selling children for decades.
The boy slowly folded the documents.
His eyes no longer held tears.
Only determination.
He looked at the ballerina and whispered,
"We're not fighting for our family anymore..."
"We're fighting for every child who never got the chance to find theirs."
And somewhere across the city...
Father Michael looked out his office window as his phone rang.
A frightened voice whispered only four words:
"He found Locker 27."

For the first time in thirty years...
The man everyone trusted... was terrified.
