CHAPTER 2 The Performance That Stopped Time

For several long seconds, nothing happened.

No one spoke.

No one laughed.

Ethan simply sat behind the battered drum kit, eyes closed, breathing slowly as though the roaring arena no longer existed. Even the cameras hesitated, zooming in on the cracked drumsticks resting lightly between his fingers.

One judge leaned back in his chair and muttered, "If he's too nervous to begin, let's move on."

Before anyone could respond...

Tap.

One soft strike landed on the worn snare.

It sounded surprisingly warm.

Then another.

A gentle rhythm followed—steady, simple, almost like a heartbeat.

Tap... tap... tap...

The hall became strangely quiet.

Ethan's wrists moved with incredible control. Every motion was effortless, every beat perfectly placed. The rusty cymbals shimmered with unexpected richness, and the battered bass drum produced a deep, emotional pulse that echoed through the room.

People stopped smiling.

The rhythm grew faster.

Without warning, Ethan launched into an explosive solo unlike anything the audience had ever witnessed.

His broken sticks blurred through the air.

The cracked drums responded with astonishing precision.

Every beat carried emotion rather than force.

It wasn't just technique.

It was a story.

The audience could hear grief.

Hope.

Loneliness.

Love.

Every strike seemed to speak words that no voice could express.

The camera operators forgot to change angles.

The judges leaned forward.

The contestants backstage stared in disbelief.

Then Ethan did something impossible.

One drumstick finally snapped in half.

A loud crack echoed through the speakers.

Gasps filled the arena.

Everyone expected him to stop.

Instead, Ethan continued with only one full stick and the broken half of the other, creating an even more complex rhythm. His hands danced across the drums with breathtaking speed, turning the accident into part of the performance.

The audience erupted into spontaneous applause—but Ethan wasn't finished.

He stood up while still playing.

He used the rims.

The stands.

The cymbal supports.

Even the old wooden stool became part of the music.

Every object around him transformed into an instrument.

The arena was no longer watching a competition.

They were witnessing pure artistry.

As the final rhythm slowed, Ethan gently placed the broken stick on top of the snare.

Silence.

One second.

Two seconds.

No one moved.

Then...

An elderly man in the front row slowly stood and began clapping.

Another joined him.

Then another.

Within moments, the entire arena rose to its feet.

A thunderous standing ovation shook the building.

Some spectators wiped tears from their eyes without fully understanding why.

The judges looked at one another, speechless.

The producer who had mocked Ethan lowered his head in shame.

For the first time that evening, no one saw a poor young man.

They saw a true musician.

But the biggest surprise had not yet been revealed.

As Ethan quietly prepared to leave the stage, the giant screen behind him suddenly flickered to life...

And an old photograph appeared.

It showed a smiling drummer standing beside a little boy holding the very same cracked drumsticks.

The audience fell silent once again.

One of the oldest judges suddenly stood up, his face turning pale.

May you like

He whispered only four words.

"...I know that drummer."
