Chapter 5 - Out of the Ashes

Headline: A LITERAL BLOOD_BATH: Leo Mercer Finds His Savior is a Monster. The explosion of white light and deafening sound shattered the room. The crystal chandelier violently rattled as the four Voss hitmen screamed, blinded and disoriented, firing wildly into the ceiling and walls. Dom staggered backward, dropping his gun as his ears rang with agonizing intensity.

But Quinn Harper hadn’t been blinded. She had known the exact millisecond of the blast.

In the pitch blackness of the smoke and shattered light, she moved like an apex predator in her natural habitat. Her movements weren't human; they were mechanical, precise, and devoid of hesitation.

Thud. Crack.

The first hitman didn’t even see her approach. Quinn’s hand shot out, grabbing his gun barrel, twisting it until his wrist snapped, and driving her tactical knife straight through his throat. Before his body hit the floor, she snatched his suppressed pistol.

Puff. Puff.

Two rounds directly into the chest of the second hitman. He collapsed like a sack of wet flour.

Marcus Voss was screaming, blindly waving his arms. “Kill her! Kill the bitch!”

Victor Voss managed to blink the spots from his eyes, catching a glimpse of a shadow moving through the red neon haze. He raised his shotgun, but Quinn was already sliding across the mahogany table. She kicked him squarely in the chest, sending him crashing into the wall, then placed the barrel of her gun beneath his chin.

Puff.

Three down.

Dom Russo, terrified out of his mind, crawled toward the door, trying to unlock it with bloody fingers. He felt a cold leather boot press heavily onto his spine, pinning him to the floor.

“Please,” Dom whimpered, looking up into the muddy hazel eyes of the woman he had mocked for weeks. “Please, I’ll pay you. Double what Leo pays you. Triple!”

Quinn looked down at him. Her face was completely clean, save for a single splash of dark crimson across her left cheekbone. Her expression hadn't changed since the day she walked into the meat supplier's office.

“You’re short on your envelope, Dom,” she whispered.

Puff.

When the smoke finally cleared, the room was a slaughterhouse. Six men had entered with the intent to murder Leo Mercer. Five of them were now draped across the furniture, their blood soaking into the expensive Marlowe Hotel carpets.

Leo Mercer sat in his chair, completely untouched, his breath catching in his throat as he watched Quinn calmly wipe her knife on Marcus Voss’s silk tie.

Marcus was the only one left alive, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to his shoulder, cowering in the corner.

Quinn walked over to the door, unlocked the deadbolt, and swung it open. The hallway was dead silent. She turned back to Leo, her voice as flat and casual as a secretary announcing a lunch break.

“The room is clear, Mr. Mercer. We should leave before hotel management checks the noise.”
