Chapter 6 - The Architect of Shadows

Headline: THE JUDAS COIN: The Terrifying Truth Behind Who Opened the Door. The ride back to the West Side was silent. The armored Lincoln hummed smoothly through the midnight fog, but inside the cabin, the atmosphere had completely shifted. Leo Mercer no longer looked at Quinn Harper as a quirky bodyguard or a reckless joke.

He looked at her with profound, paralyzing fear.

They arrived at the windowless office behind the meat supplier. Leo slumped into his scarred walnut desk, pouring himself three fingers of straight bourbon. His hands were shaking. Quinn stood by the door, her hands back in her pockets, staring at the empty chair in the hallway—the one that had belonged to Tommy Vale.

“Who are you?” Leo whispered, his voice trembling. “No mall cop, no regular contractor moves like that. You wiped out an entire elite hit squad in less than ninety seconds. Who sent you, Quinn? Was it the Feds? The CIA? Another family?”

Quinn slowly walked into the room, stopping right in front of his desk. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a small, metallic object, and dropped it onto the wood.

It clinked sharply.

Leo looked down. It was a heavy silver coin, engraved with a sparrow trapped inside a circle of thorns.

Leo’s blood ran cold. He knew that mark. Every major crime boss from New York to Los Angeles knew it. It was the calling card of The Aviary—a mythical, deep-state syndicate of clean-up operatives who only intervened when a city’s underworld became too loud, too messy, and threatened to expose the politicians who pulled the strings above them.

“You’re an Apex Cleaner,” Leo breathed, slipping backward into his chair. “The Voss brothers… they weren't just fighting me. They were bringing too much heat to the docks. The media was sniffing around. The politicians got scared.”

“The Voss brothers were a cancer,” Quinn said calmly. “And so was your underboss, Dom. They were making Chicago untidy.”

“And me?” Leo asked, his heart hammering against his ribs. “Are you here to clean me out too?”

May you like

Quinn leaned down, placing both hands on his desk, her muddy hazel eyes finally widening just enough for Leo to see the absolute, infinite vacuum inside them.

“That depends on your next choice, Leo.”
