Chapter 3 - The Forgotten Document

At 11:00 AM, Grant charged into the private legal office of his long-time defense lawyer, Vance Sterling, slamming the door so hard the glass rattled.

"She played me, Vance!" Grant shouted, pacing frantically across the Persian rug. "She sat there taking it for seven years! She never said a word! How could she pull off a full asset freeze in twelve hours?!"

Vance sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his expression grim as he stared at a heavy blue leather folder resting in front of him.

"Grant... sit down," Vance said quietly.

"I don't want to sit down! I need an injunction! Call a judge! Override her power of attorney! Claim she’s mentally unstable due to her hospital trauma!"

"You can't," Vance said flatly, pushing the blue folder across the desk. "Because seven years ago, three weeks before you two got married, you signed a pre-operational corporate structure agreement drafted by Evelyn."

Grant frowned, grabbing the document. "What is this? This is just the founding charter for Hart Development!"

"Read Section 14, Subsection C," Vance said, pointing a trembling finger at the bottom of page thirty-two.

Grant’s eyes scanned the fine print, and as he read, the color drained entirely from his lips:

“In the event that Evelyn Hart suffers severe physical incapacitation or life-threatening injury resulting from domestic, third-party, or non-natural occurrences, all voting shares, intellectual property, holding accounts, and operational authority of Hart Development and its subsidiary entities shall instantly convert into an irrevocable trust governed exclusively by the designated compliance trustee [Vance & Associates Legal Management], with full authority to initiate forensic accounting, liquidation, and immediate clawback of all commingled assets.”

Grant dropped the pages onto the desk, his hands shaking violently. "She... she wrote this before we were even married?"

"Evelyn wasn't just your corporate lawyer, Grant," Vance said with a heavy sigh of defeat. "She was the top compliance prosecutor in the state before she met you. She built your entire company from scratch. She knew every loop, every offshore account, every tax dodge, and every lie you ever pulled. She didn't just protect you from the IRS... she built a trapdoor inside your empire, and she kept her finger on the trigger for seven years."

"She can't prove I beat her!" Grant spat, panic turning into desperation. "I told the paramedics she fell! It’s my word against hers!"

"It’s not her word against yours," Vance replied coldly, pulling up a digital video file on his desktop monitor. "The neighbor’s security camera didn't catch the interior of your house... but it caught your voice on the driveway deck through an open window, clearly stating: 'If you ever ask about that eighty thousand again, I'll finish what I started.' The district attorney just issued an emergency arrest warrant for felony attempted murder, aggravated assault, and corporate embezzlement."

Grant took two steps back, his chest heaving. The walls were closing in, brick by brick, document by document.
