Chapter 4 - The Arrest at the Gala

Two days later, the Grand Crystal Ballroom at the Plaza Hotel was packed with three hundred of the city’s most powerful figures.

Grant Hart had spent $50,000 out of his remaining pocket cash to host the annual Real Estate Moguls Gala. It was a desperate, high-stakes gamble to project strength, squash rumors of his impending financial ruin, and convince private investors to inject emergency cash into his failing company.

Dressed in an immaculate tuxedo, Grant stood near the champagne fountain, holding court with three prominent city investors.

"It’s all just minor administrative paperwork, gentlemen," Grant said, flashing a confident, magnetic smile. "My wife had a small domestic accident—a tragic fall down our grand staircase—and in the confusion, her temporary medical proxy made a few legal administrative errors. Everything will be resolved by Monday."

"Is that so, Grant?" a cool, razor-sharp voice echoed from the main entrance of the ballroom.

The entire ballroom went dead silent. Heads turned simultaneously toward the double doors.

Standing there in a breathtaking, tailored black velvet suit was Evelyn Hart.

My dark hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, perfectly concealing the medical bandages on the back of my neck. Though my breath was still somewhat short and a concealed medical harness supported my fractured ribs beneath my jacket, my posture was royal, unyielding, and absolute.

Beside me stood Julian Vance, two uniformed state troopers, and Lead Senior Inspector Marcus Thorne from the Federal Financial Crimes Unit.

Grant’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the marble floor. Sparkling champagne spilled over his polished leather shoes.

"Evelyn..." Grant whispered, his voice cracking. "What... what are you doing out of the hospital?"

I walked forward slowly, every step echoing through the silent, massive hall. The crowd parted like the Red Sea.

"I came to deliver your final performance review, Grant," I said softly, my voice amplified by the dead silence of the room.

"You're crazy!" Grant yelled, taking a step back, looking around frantically at the wealthy investors who were now pulling out their phones to record. "You're delusional! Ladies and gentlemen, my wife is suffering from severe post-traumatic confusion! She fell—"

"I didn't fall, Grant," I said, stopping three feet away from him. "And you didn't just steal eighty thousand dollars from our joint account to pay off city planners. You embezzled four million dollars from the Harborview Pension Fund over the past three years."

Inspector Thorne stepped forward, pulling a gold-sealed federal warrant from his jacket.

"Grant Hart," Thorne announced loudly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, grand larceny, wire fraud, and falsification of corporate records. You have the right to remain silent..."

"No! Get off me!" Grant screamed as the two state troopers grabbed his arms, slamming him face-down onto a formal dining table. Crystal glasses crashed, dinner plates shattered, and screams erupted across the room as flashbulbs exploded everywhere.

As the officers pulled a sobbing, hysterical Grant to his feet in handcuffs, he looked at me with bloodshot, terrified eyes.

"Evelyn! Please! Think about our family! Think about your parents! If I go down, they lose everything!"

I looked him dead in the eye, my face a mask of absolute stone.

"They already did."
