Marcus opened the door first, ready to fight if necessary.

Every man outside immediately lowered his head.
"Ma'am..."
One bodyguard spoke respectfully.
"We've finally found you."
The old woman stepped outside with surprising calm.
The four ex-convicts watched in confusion.
The village mayor suddenly arrived, breathless.
Behind him came police officers.
Journalists.
Luxury vehicles stretched down the muddy road.
The villagers gathered, whispering nervously.
"What is happening?"
"Who are those people?"
Then one black limousine stopped.
An elderly gentleman stepped out wearing an expensive tailored coat.

He walked straight toward the old woman...

"Mother..."
The entire village froze.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
The man turned toward the crowd.
"My name is Richard Ashcroft."
Gasps spread instantly.
Everyone recognized the name.
Ashcroft Global was one of the largest charitable foundations in the country.
The billionaire continued.
"My mother disappeared five years ago after refusing to live with luxury."
Tears filled his eyes.
"She said she wanted to spend the rest of her life helping strangers without anyone knowing who she was."
The reporters exploded into action.
Cameras flashed nonstop.
Then Richard looked toward the four former prisoners.
"Were these men with you all night?"
The villagers immediately shouted.
"They're dangerous!"
"They're criminals!"
"They just got out of prison!"
Richard remained silent.
The old woman gently took Marcus's hand.
"They protected me."
Everyone stared.
"When they thought those security cars came to hurt me..."
"...they stood in front of my door."
"They were willing to risk their freedom again... to protect someone they had only met a few hours earlier."
The old woman turned toward the villagers.
"But yesterday..."
"When they knocked on your doors..."
"You refused to even give them water."
The silence became unbearable.
Then she revealed the final truth.
"I knew exactly who they were before opening my door."
Marcus looked stunned.
"You... knew?"
She nodded.
"I've spent years visiting prisons."
"I read every one of your rehabilitation reports."
"I know every mistake you've ever made."
She smiled gently.
"And I also know every effort you've made to become better men."
Many villagers quietly lowered their heads.
