Chapter 4 - THE GALA OF SHADOWS

The Grand Ballroom at the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, champagne towers, and high-society whispers. Flashbulbs blinded the guests as the elite of Manhattan arrived.
Julian Buchanan stood near the stage, a glass of champagne in hand, surrounded by several prominent board members. He was smiling, confident. Tonight was his coronation. The papers were already printed: Franklin Buchanan steps down due to personal instability; Julian Buchanan takes the helm.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian announced into the microphone, taking the stage. "Thank you for coming. Before we begin the charity auction, we have a grave matter of business. As you know, my brother Franklin has suffered immense grief over the years. Unfortunately, that grief has led to recent decisions that threaten the stability of Buchanan Enterprises. Tonight, the board will vote on a transition of power—"
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.
The chatter instantly died. The music cut out.
Franklin Buchanan walked into the ballroom, looking every bit the ruthless king of Wall Street. But it wasn't his presence that caused a synchronized gasp to echo through the crowd of five hundred people.
It was the woman on his arm.
Valerie walked beside him, her head held high, wearing a stunning black velvet gown that contrasted sharply with her pale skin. Her hair was swept up, revealing her elegant neck and the unmistakable emerald ring glittering on her finger.
"My apologies for being late, Julian," Franklin’s voice boomed through the silent room. "But I brought a special guest. I believe you all remember my wife, Elena Buchanan."
Chaos erupted.
Reporters rushed forward, cameras flashing frantically. Board members spilled their drinks. Julian froze on stage, his face turning an unsightly shade of green. He gripped the microphone so hard his knuckles turned white.
"This... this is an outrage!" Julian shouted into the mic, his voice cracking. "That woman is an impostor! A street-level fraud Franklin hired to disrupt this vote! Elena died five years ago!"
Franklin and Valerie marched straight down the center aisle toward the stage. The crowd parted for them like the Red Sea.
"Is she an impostor, Julian?" Valerie spoke up, her voice amplified by the microphone Franklin held up for her. She looked directly at Julian, and in that moment, the final wall in her mind crumbled. The bright lights, the stage, the terrified look on Julian's face—it triggered a massive wave of memories.
She remembered this ballroom. She remembered Julian whispering threats to her in the corner five years ago.
"I remember you, Julian," Valerie said, her voice dropping all traces of her East New York accent, adopting the refined cadence of Elena Buchanan. "I remember finding the offshore accounts. I remember confronting you in the office. And I remember you telling me that if I boarded that plane to Miami, I’d never have to worry about the charity fund again."
The crowd murmured in shock. Julian backed away from the podium. "You’re insane! You have no proof! Security, remove this woman!"
"Oh, we have proof," Victoria Buchanan’s voice rang out as she stepped into the ballroom from a side entrance, holding a tablet high. "We tracked the offshore accounts that accessed Elena’s trust fund three months ago. The IP address used to transfer the funds belongs to your private villa in the Hamptons, Julian."
Julian looked around wildly. His board members were backing away from him. The security guards he had hired stood frozen, unsure of who to obey.
"You think you've won?" Julian snarled, his mask completely slipping. He reached into his suit jacket.
"Franklin, look out!" Valerie screamed, throwing herself in front of him.
But Julian didn't pull a gun. Instead, he pulled out a small detonator device. "If I’m going down, I’m taking the Buchanan legacy with me! The basement of this hotel is rigged. Back off, or we all burn!"
Panic erupted in the ballroom. Screaming guests rushed for the exits, trampling over chairs and tables. In the chaos, Julian leaped off the stage and bolted toward the backstage exit.
"Stay here!" Franklin shouted to Valerie, preparing to chase his brother.
"No! I'm coming with you!" Valerie cried, tearing the bottom of her velvet gown to run faster.
They pursued Julian through the labyrinthine corridors of the Plaza Hotel, down into the concrete basement levels. The air grew thick and hot. They cornered him near the main electrical vault.
Julian turned around, trapped, his back against the high-voltage panels. He laughed maniacally, his eyes bloodshot. "You think you found your wife, Franklin? You think this is a happy ending? You don't even know the biggest lie of all!"
"Give it up, Julian," Franklin growled, stepping forward slowly. "It’s over."
"Is it?" Julian sneered, looking at Valerie. "Tell me, 'Valerie'... did you ever wonder why your beloved mother, Maria Morales, looked nothing like you? Did you ever wonder why she kept you hidden in a basement apartment for five years, pumping you full of experimental memory-suppressing drugs she bought off the black market with the money I paid her?"
Valerie froze, the breath knocked out of her. "What... what are you talking about?"
"Maria Morales isn't your mother, you fool!" Julian laughed. "She was the nurse on duty at the clinic where your body washed ashore five years ago! I hired her to finish the job and kill you. But she got greedy. She saw your face, realized who you were, and offered me a deal. She would keep you alive but brainwashed, living as her slave and caretaker, as long as I kept sending monthly payments to her account! You weren't saved by a loving mother, Valerie. You were enslaved by your worst enemy!"

Before Valerie could process the horrifying truth, Julian pressed the button on the detonator.
A massive explosion rocked the far side of the basement. The lights went out, and structural beams began to collapse, raining concrete down upon them.
