Chapter 2 - A WHISPER IN THE DARKThe agonizing hours bled into one another. Outside the operating room, the heavy weight of silence hung over the executive board of Blackwood International. None of them dared to leave; to step away from Julian Blackwood at this moment was to forfeit their career.

Inside the operating room, I was floating in a dark, cold abyss.
I could hear distant, muffled sounds—the sharp beep of heart monitors, the urgent shouting of doctors, the cold scrape of metal instruments. But above all the noise, I heard Genevieve’s malicious whisper echoing in my mind: “Lose the baby, or lose your life.”
No.
I fought through the anesthesia, clawing my way back to consciousness. I couldn't leave my baby. I couldn't let her win.
"She’s fighting back!" a surgeon’s voice broke through the haze. "Adrenaline is stabilizing her pulse! Prepare for immediate emergency C-section!"
Hours later, the heavy doors opened.
Julian sprang from his chair, his usual calm demeanor completely shattered. The lead surgeon stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask, looking exhausted but relieved.
"Mr. Blackwood... it was a miracle," the surgeon breathed. "Your wife sustained severe trauma and internal bleeding, but she survived. And your daughter... she is tiny, but she is breathing on her own."
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. A tear slipped down his cheek, tracing the line of his jaw. "Can I see them?"
"Your daughter is in the NICU for observation. Your wife is being moved to the ICU. She’s awake, but weak."
Julian didn't wait. He pushed past the doctors and rushed into the recovery room.
When he saw me lying there—pale, hooked up to IV lines, with bruises covering my face and arms—his knees nearly buckled. He rushed to the side of the bed, grasping my cold hand in his, pressing his forehead against my knuckles.
"I’m sorry," he sobbed, his shoulders shaking. "I’m so sorry, my love. I thought I had time to clean up the company before bringing you into the light. I thought I could keep you safe."
I opened my cracked lips, my voice barely a whisper. "The... baby...?"
"She’s alive," Julian smiled through his tears, kissing my fingers. "She’s safe. Our little girl is safe."
A faint sigh of relief escaped me, but the warmth was quickly overshadowed by a sudden, chilling memory. I leaned in, pulling Julian closer with what little strength I had left.
"Julian..." I croaked, my throat burning. "It wasn't... just your mother."

Julian froze, his eyes darkening instantly. "What do you mean?"
"Before she pushed me..." I swallowed hard, tears welling in my eyes. "She was on the phone. Someone paid her... someone gave her the drug that triggered my early contractions before the fall. She had an accomplice inside the house."
