Chapter 6 - The Emergency Family SummitBy late afternoon, desperate for shelter from the blizzard, Helen and Kyle resorted to the only person left who had any authority: Grandma Ruth.

Ruth had summoned them—not to her estate, but to a neutral conference room at Martin Vance’s downtown law office.

When Nora and I arrived with Maggie, my parents and brother were already seated at the long glass table. They looked utterly shell-shocked. Helen’s hair was disheveled, her expensive winter coat damp from the snow, and Kyle was glaring at the floor with his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek.

At the head of the table sat Grandma Ruth, leaning heavily on her carved mahogany cane, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard authority.

“Sit down, Audrey,” Ruth commanded, gesturing to the seats opposite my bewildered family.

I took my seat, keeping Nora close beside me.

Helen looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and pleading. “Audrey, please. You can’t let her do this. We raised you in that house. We gave you a place to stay when you were struggling. How can you be so cold?”

“Cold?” I repeated softly, the memory of Nora walking 1.7 miles through the 28-degree night flashing vividly in my mind. “You locked a ten-year-old child out of your house on Christmas evening, Helen. You left her standing in the snow with the gifts she wrapped herself because your paying Airbnb guests took priority over your own blood. And then you tried to use my housing security as a weapon in a custody battle.”

“It was a miscommunication!” Kyle barked, slamming his hand on the table. “The table was full! We didn't plan for—!”

“Shut up, Kyle,” Ruth’s voice cut across the room like a whip, silencing him instantly. She stood up, leaning on her cane, towering over my brother despite her ninety-four years.

“For eighteen years, I allowed you to live in my home under the assumption that you were building a sanctuary for this family,” Ruth said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. “Instead, you turned my home into a commercial enterprise, you abused my trust, and most unforgivably, you treated my great-granddaughter like an unwanted stranger on the holiest night of the year.”

Ruth turned her piercing gaze toward Helen and Robert. “The lease is terminated. The accounts are frozen. Every penny you pocketed from that basement Airbnb is currently being calculated by forensic accountants for immediate restitution. You have forty-eight hours to clear your personal belongings out of my house before the sheriff’s deputies remove what’s left to the curb.”

Helen let out a choked sob and buried her face in her hands. Kyle stared at the table in stunned, horrified disbelief.

The reckoning had finally arrived.
