Chapter 5 - The Corporate Conspiracy

Julian Vance did not take defeat lying down. By midnight, the disgruntled partner was sitting in a dimly lit corner booth at an exclusive downtown Seattle lounge, meeting with Howard Sterling—the CEO of Sterling Capital and Mercer’s fiercest rival.
"He’s compromised, Howard," Julian hissed, swirling a glass of amber whiskey. "The man worth two billion dollars is letting a three-year-old child and some low-level single mother dictate corporate policy. He blocked the Pier 46 buyout. He’s shifting millions into community housing trusts. If we let him continue, Mercer Urban will be bankrupt within two quarters."
Howard Sterling smiled slowly, his eyes glinting with malice. "People don't fall from grace because they're weak, Julian. They fall because they have something to lose."
"What do you mean?"
"Grant Mercer has spent his entire life being an untouchable ghost," Howard said, leaning forward. "No family. No weaknesses. No soft spots. But now? Now he’s got a woman and a child living inside his fortress. All we have to do is prove that Clara Bellamy isn't just an employee—she’s a financial manipulator who wormed her way into his estate to stage a hostile takeover from the inside."

Julian’s eyes widened. "A scandal. We leak documents to the Seattle Chronicle claiming Clara forged her employment credentials, manipulated a vulnerable billionaire, and is embezzling funds through the community housing trust."
"And by the time Grant realizes what hit him," Howard grinned, clinking his glass against Julian's, "his reputation will be in ruins, his board will stage a coup, and I'll pick up Mercer Urban for pennies on the dollar."
