Chapter 5 - The Glass House Crumbles“Surprise, brother,” Grant sneered, his face pale and sunken from three weeks in maximum security, but his eyes burning with the same sadism I knew all too well.

The red LED digital display on the plastic explosive strapped to the central support pillar of the office was ticking down from 05:00.
Five minutes.
Julian didn't flinch, but his guards immediately raised their suppressed weapons. “How did you get out of Federal Custody, Grant?”
“Marcus,” Grant laughed, a wet, manic sound. “You thought you bought him, Julian? Marcus plays both sides. He took your money to set me up, then took my money to break me out during my transport to the federal courthouse two hours ago. He promised me I could have Clara back before we left the country.”
Grant’s bloodshot eyes locked onto mine. He took a slow step forward, the detonator gripped tightly in his right hand.
“Look at you, Clara,” Grant whispered, his voice trembling with dark pleasure. “Look at what you did to our family. You thought you were so clever with your spreadsheets and your hidden cloud drives. You make that same helpless sound every time you realize you've lost.”
I didn't back away. For three years, I had cowered. I had calculated floorboard creaks. I had mapped out bruise healing times. But the woman who took those beatings died on the cold bathroom tile three weeks ago.
“I didn't lose, Grant,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and unyielding despite the wire holding my jaw. “Look at the clock.”
Grant glanced down at the timer: 03:42.
“You think Marcus is waiting for you at the getaway helicopter, don't you?” I continued, stepping right into the center of the room, between Julian’s guards and Grant’s bomb. “Marcus didn't break you out to save you, Grant. He broke you out because Julian’s wire transfers only go through if both living Mercer brothers sign off with biometric authorization.”
Julian’s eyes snapped toward me. For the first time, I saw a crack in his icy composure.
“What are you talking about?” Julian demanded.
“I altered the smart contract on the Geneva accounts three days ago,” I said, pulling my old tablet out from my coat. “I tied the release of the $2 billion trust to a dual-custody pulse lock. The money doesn't move unless both Grant and Julian press their thumbs to this screen simultaneously.”
Grant stared at me, confused. “You’re lying!”
“Try to make the transfer, Julian,” I challenged, turning to the elder brother. “See what happens to your offshore funds.”
Julian pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, his fingers flying across the glass screen. Seconds later, his face drained of every drop of color.
“The accounts are frozen,” Julian whispered. “Pending dual-biometric confirmation.”

“Marcus set you both up,” I said, looking between the two brothers who had tortured my life. “He knew Grant would come here for revenge. He knew Julian would come here for the key. And in two minutes, the police tactical team—the real federal marshals—will enter this building.”
CHAPTER 5 HOOK: Grant looks at the timer—00:30—and screams, "If I can't have the money, nobody gets the girl!" He slams his thumb onto the detonator—but instead of an explosion, every light in the building goes pitch black, and the mechanical locks on the doors seal us all inside.
