Chapter 6 - Darkness and LedgersThe pitch-black room exploded into panic.

Shots rang out in the dark—suppressed, metallic thwacks hitting drywall and glass. Julian’s guards were firing blindly. Grant screamed as heavy furniture crashed to the floor.

I didn't run. I knew this layout better than any of them; I had audited this department for four years before I ever met Grant Mercer.

I dropped to my knees, sliding beneath the heavy mahogany conference table. Reaching under the secondary lip of the desk, I pulled the emergency manual release lever—a security override installed for federal asset seizure raids.

A red emergency strobe light flickered on, bathing the room in a bloody, rhythmic glare.

Grant was on the floor, bleeding from a shoulder wound where one of Julian’s guards had shot him in the chaos. Julian was backed against the reinforced glass window, his gun raised, eyes wild.

“Clara!” Julian roared over the blaring security alarms. “Where is the override code? Give me the code and I’ll take you to Maya!”

I stood up from behind the desk, holding the master encrypted hard drive in my hand.

“Maya was never in Geneva, was she, Julian?” I said, my voice echoing off the concrete walls.

Julian froze.

“I ran the satellite tracking data on the phone call I received in my apartment,” I said, stepping toward him in the red light. “The call didn't originate from Switzerland. It came from a server farm in downtown Seattle. You used an AI voice synthesizer created from my sister’s old voicemails to manipulate me.”

Julian’s jaw tightened. The calculated mastermind had been unmasked.

“Maya died four years ago in that clinic,” I said, a single tear cutting through the dust on my cheek. “You used her memory to keep me obedient. You let Grant break my bones because you knew as long as I believed she was alive, I would never burn your accounts to the ground.”

Grant pushed himself up from the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder, staring at his brother in utter shock. “Julian... you lied to me too? You told me Maya was the collateral keeping her quiet!”

“Shut up, Grant!” Julian hissed. “You were too stupid to manage her! You almost blew the entire syndicate because you couldn't control your temper!”

“I controlled her!” Grant screamed, his face contorting with pathetic, desperate rage. “She was mine! I broke her!”

“You didn't break anything, Grant,” I said, looking down at my husband. “You just gave me four years to audit every crime your family ever committed.”

I plugged the master drive directly into the wall’s federal mainframe bypass port.

CHAPTER 6 HOOK: Julian raises his gun, aiming directly between my eyes. "Then we die together, Clara." But before he can pull the trigger, the reinforced glass behind him shatters as a SWAT flashbang detonates inside the room.
