Chapter 2 - Smiling Over a Corpse

The social worker left me alone with my thoughts, but the silence was louder than any scream. I managed to reach for my personal phone, which the nurses had placed in a plastic bag on my bedside table. My fingers trembled so violently I almost dropped it.

When the screen lit up, my lock screen was flooded with notifications.

Facebook. Instagram. Group chats.

With a sickening sense of dread, I opened my mother's public Facebook page. Her post from fourteen hours ago already had hundreds of likes and comments.

“Wishing everyone a blessed, picture-perfect Christmas from our family to yours! 🎄✨ So much to be grateful for this year! #FamilyFirst #Blessed #ChristmasMagic”

Attached to the post was the exact photo Marisol had shown me—except it had been heavily cropped. My limp, pale hand had been edited out of the frame. In the comments, family friends gushed over how beautiful Diane looked, how successful Tyler seemed, and how lucky they were to have such a tight-knit family.

“Where’s Claire?” one distant aunt had commented.

My mother’s reply was pinned to the top: “Oh, you know Claire! She caught a nasty stomach bug and insisted on sleeping through the festivities. We checked on her before we left, sweet thing! ❤️”

A bile-tasting laugh escaped my throat. A stomach bug. They had framed my near-death experience as a convenient excuse for my absence.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated. An incoming call from an unknown number.

I swallowed hard and pressed answer. "Hello?"

"Claire," a sharp, familiar voice hissed into my ear. It was Diane. The soft, maternal facade she used for her social media followers was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp edge. "Thank God you're awake. You have caused an absolute nightmare."

"I caused a nightmare?" I whispered, my voice shaking with rage. "Tyler threw me into the table, Mom! I woke up in the ER with a concussion! You left me on the floor!"

"Don't you dare raise your tone to me, you ungrateful little brat," Diane snapped. "You threw a temper tantrum because Tyler asked you for a simple favor, you tripped over the rug, and you knocked yourself out. We didn't realize how seriously you were hurt until we were already at the club. Do you have any idea what the police turning up at our house does to Ron’s reputation? To Tyler’s career?"

"You took photos over my body, Mom. I saw the uncropped file."

The line went dead silent for three long seconds. When Diane spoke again, her voice was dripping with venom.

"Listen to me very carefully, Claire. You are going to tell the doctors and the social worker that you had too much to drink, you slipped, and it was all an accident. If you ruin this family's name over a clumsy mishap, I will make sure you inherit absolutely nothing from your biological father's estate. We will ruin you. Do you understand?"

CHAPTER 2 HOOK: Before I could reply, the door to my hospital room burst open. It wasn't a doctor or a nurse. Standing there, wearing a designer wool coat and a smirk that made my blood run cold, was Tyler. And in his hand, he held a document that explained exactly why they needed me silent.
