Chapter 5 - Silencing Claire Cole

I scrambled to shove the documents into my bag, locking the safe just as the heavy front door downstairs opened.
"Claire?" my mother’s voice echoed up the grand staircase, sharp and suspicious. "Is that you? The hospital said you discharged yourself."
I squeezed my eyes shut, my mind racing. There was no way out of the office without passing the stairs. I had to face them. I walked out onto the landing, clutching my bag tightly against my bruised ribs.
Diane stood at the bottom of the stairs, her fur coat draped over her shoulders. Beside her were Ron and Tyler. They looked up at me, their faces completely devoid of any familial warmth. They looked like predators cornering their prey.
"You shouldn't have come back here, Claire," Ron said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped forward, taking off his leather gloves. "We gave you a simple choice at the hospital. You should have signed the papers."
"I know about the insurance policy, Ron," I shouted down at them, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I know about the Phenobarbital! You drugged me! You planned to kill me and make it look like an overdose because Tyler ruined your family finances!"
Diane let out a cold, mocking laugh. "Oh, Claire. Who is going to believe a word you say? Look at you. Discharged yourself against medical advice, raving about conspiracies. We’ve already spent the morning speaking with our family attorney and a private psychiatrist. By tomorrow, you will be legally declared mentally incompetent due to severe substance abuse and psychological trauma. We will take control of your trust fund anyway, and you will spend the rest of your life in a private facility where no one will ever hear your voice again."
Tyler took a step up the stairs, a twisted smile on his face. "Make it easy on yourself, Claire. Give us the bag."
I backed away, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. I reached into my pocket, my fingers brushing against my phone. I had started a voice recording the moment I entered the house, but a recording wouldn't save me if they locked me away in an institution where no one cared about the truth.
"Stay away from me!" I screamed, backing toward the hallway window.

"Grab her, Tyler," Diane ordered coldly, not a single shred of maternal instinct left in her eyes. "Let's finish this."
CHAPTER 5 HOOK: Tyler lunged up the stairs toward me. I swung my heavy bag, striking him directly across the face. He stumbled back, cursing, but Ron was already moving up behind him, blocking my only escape route. I was trapped on the second floor, facing the very people who had left me for dead on Christmas night. But just as Ron reached out to grab my throat, the heavy glass front doors of the mansion shattered inward.
