Chapter 4 - The Apex Predator's Intervention

Derek spun away from the door, his hand instinctively dropping to the service weapon holstered at his hip. His cop instincts flared, recognizing threat even through his alcohol-fogged brain.
"Who the hell are you?" Derek barked, squaring his shoulders, flashing his badge with aggressive arrogance. "Back up right now. This is a domestic dispute. I'm Officer Derek Lawson, Boston PD, Precinct 12. Turn around and walk away before I arrest the lot of you for obstruction."
Gabriel Ashford didn't even slow down. He didn't look at the badge. He looked at Derek the way a grown man looks at a cockroach crawling across a clean kitchen counter.
Behind Gabriel, one of his massive guards stepped forward with terrifying speed, closing the distance before Derek could even draw his weapon. A heavy hand clamped down on Derek’s wrist, pinning his hand to his holster with the immovable force of a hydraulic press.
"What the—get your hands off me! I'm a police officer!" Derek roared, struggling violently, his face turning purple. "I'll have your heads on spikes! Do you know who I am?"
"Yes," a voice murmured from the shadows.
Gabriel stepped directly into the dim light of the hallway, stopping inches from Derek. He was wearing a sharp, midnight-blue bespoke suit, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. He looked completely out of place in the squalid Dorchester apartment building, yet he owned the space effortlessly.
Gabriel looked Derek up and down, noting the rumpled uniform, the cheap badge, the smell of cheap beer, and the ugly, bloated arrogance radiating from him.
"You're a low-level municipal employee with a badge, a drinking problem, and an aggressive streak against people half your size," Gabriel said smoothly, his voice dangerously soft. "In my world, men like you aren't even worth the cost of the bullet."
Derek’s eyes bulged with rage. "You arrogant piece of—"
With a sickening crunch, Gabriel’s guard twisted Derek’s wrist. A sharp, high-pitched shriek of agony ripped from Derek’s throat as his arm was forced back at an unnatural angle, his service weapon clattering uselessly against the concrete floor.
Harper watched through the crack in the door, her hands clamped over her mouth, her eyes wide with shock and terror.
Gabriel leaned in close to Derek, whispering something into the struggling cop's ear. Harper couldn't hear the words, but she saw the exact moment the color drained entirely from Derek’s face. The arrogant, belligerent police officer suddenly looked like a terrified child staring into the jaws of a lion.
"Do you understand me, Officer Lawson?" Gabriel asked, stepping back and straightening his cuffs. "Or do I need to explain it to you in a language involving the Inner Harbor?"
"I... I understand," Derek choked out, sweat beading heavily on his forehead as his arm was wrenched another fraction of an inch.

Gabriel turned his gaze toward the door. He looked through the narrow gap, his dark eyes locking onto Harper’s terrified face.
"Pack your things, Harper," Gabriel said, his voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "You and your brother are moving tonight."
