Chapter 6 - The Velvet Cage

Life inside the Ashford residence was no longer just about cleaning marble floors and avoiding eye contact. It had evolved into something far more complex, dangerous, and intoxicating.
For the next two weeks, Harper and Noah lived in a luxurious suite on the second floor—far away from the third-floor private quarters, yet perpetually orbiting Gabriel’s dark, commanding world. Noah was enrolled in a private, highly secure local school, attended by a personal driver every morning. His cough was gone, thanks to proper medical care, and for the first time in his life, he was eating three full meals a day.
And Harper? Harper was no longer just a maid.
She was Gabriel’s shadow.
Wherever he moved through the massive estate, she found herself stationed nearby. Not because Mrs. Morrison ordered it, but because Gabriel subtly, relentlessly demanded it. He wanted her close. He wanted her under his constant surveillance, protected by the impenetrable walls of his fortress, yet constantly reminded of her debt.
One evening, deep past midnight, the grand library was silent save for the crackling fire in the massive stone fireplace.
Harper stood near the mahogany desk, carefully organizing a stack of financial ledgers, her movements smooth and precise. Her bruises had finally faded into pale, yellowish memories, her ribs had knitted back together under the care of a private physician Gabriel had quietly sent to her room, and her skin had regained its healthy glow.
She wore a fitted black silk blouse and tailored trousers—no longer a maid's uniform, but the attire of someone belonging to a much higher echelon of the house.
Gabriel sat behind the desk, reviewing a shipment manifest from the Seaport docks. He hadn't said a word in twenty minutes, yet the air between them thrummed with a heavy, magnetic tension.
"You're working too late," Gabriel finally broke the silence, not looking up from his papers.
"I'm just finishing up, Mr. Ashford," Harper replied smoothly, her voice gaining a quiet confidence it had never possessed before.
Gabriel closed the folder with a sharp snap. He leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers over his flat stomach, and stared at her.
"Drop the 'Mr. Ashford'," he said quietly. "When we're in this room, my name is Gabriel."
Harper hesitated, her fingers pausing on the leather-bound ledger. She looked up, meeting his piercing gaze without flinching. She had learned over the past fortnight that looking Gabriel in the eye didn't invite punishment; it invited respect.
"All right... Gabriel," she tested the name on her tongue. It felt heavy, dangerous, yet strangely natural.
A rare, faint smirk touched the corner of Gabriel’s mouth. "Good. Now come here."
Harper’s heart skipped a beat, but she didn't hesitate. She walked around the mahogany desk, stopping just an arm's length away from him.
Gabriel reached out, his warm, calloused fingers wrapping gently around her wrist—not with the bone-crushing grip of Derek, but with a firm, possessive hold that anchored her in place. He pulled her closer until she was standing between his knees.
"Derek’s trial started today," Gabriel said softly, his dark eyes searching her face for any sign of weakness, fear, or hesitation.
Harper felt a cold shiver run down her spine, but the terror she expected didn't come. Instead, a profound wave of liberation washed over her.
"Is it over?" she whispered.
"He's facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary," Gabriel replied, his thumb lightly stroking the inside of her wrist. "His badge has been stripped. His friends in the department have distanced themselves like rats from a sinking ship. He will never touch you again, Harper. Never."
A single tear escaped Harper’s eye, rolling down her cheek—not of sorrow, but of absolute, crushing relief. The ghost that had haunted her for three long years was finally dead and buried.

Gabriel reached up, his thumb gently wiping the tear from her cheek, his touch surprisingly tender for a man forged in blood and crime.
"You're free, Harper," he whispered, his voice dark and intense. "Which means... it's time to collect."
