Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Contract

Harper froze, her breath catching in her throat. The warmth of his hand against her cheek suddenly felt heavy with consequence.
"Collect what?" she asked, her voice barely a breath.
Gabriel stood up slowly, towering over her, his broad shoulders blocking out the flickering amber light of the fire. He didn't smile. His obsidian eyes burned with an absolute, terrifying intensity.
"When I pulled you out of that Dorchester apartment, I didn't do it out of the goodness of my heart," Gabriel said, his voice low and uncompromising. "Men in my position don't invest time, money, and lethal force into strangers without a return on investment."
Harper’s heart sank, a cold spike of fear piercing her chest. Was she just another possession to him? Another cage to replace the one she had just escaped?
"What do you want?" she asked, her voice hardening with defensive pride. "Do you want me to work off the debt? A lifetime of servitude? Name the price, Gabriel. I'll pay it."
Gabriel let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated deep in his chest. He reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket and pulled out a thick, legal document bound in heavy black cardstock. He tossed it casually onto the mahogany desk between them.
Harper looked down at the cover. Bold, embossed gold lettering read: ASSIGNMENT OF INTEREST & PROTECTIVE COVENANT.
"Open it," Gabriel instructed.
With trembling fingers, Harper flipped open the heavy cover. Her eyes scanned the legal jargon, her breath hitching as her brain processed the words.
It wasn't a servitude contract. It wasn't a debt ledger.
It was a prenuptial agreement. A binding union between Gabriel Ashford and Harper Queen, legally tying her name, her safety, and her brother Noah’s future to the most powerful criminal syndicate in New England—shielding them with an umbrella of absolute, impenetrable immunity.
"What... what is this?" Harper whispered, looking up at him in sheer bewilderment.
"Insurance," Gabriel said simply, stepping closer until his chest brushed against hers. "Boston is a war zone, Harper. My enemies are crawling out of the woodwork, and the federal task force is sniffing around my ports. A maid is a target. A vulnerable woman is a liability."
He reached out, resting his hand gently against the side of her neck, his thumb tracing the exact spot where Derek’s hand had once left bruises—now smooth, clean, and completely healed.
"But Mrs. Gabriel Ashford?" Gabriel continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous, hypnotic purr. "Nobody touches her. Nobody looks at her twice. And anyone who tries... finds themselves at the bottom of the harbor before the sun comes up."
Harper stared into his dark, fathomless eyes, her mind racing. It was a marriage of convenience, a tactical alliance forged in the underworld. But looking at the fierce, unyielding protection burning in Gabriel’s eyes, she knew the truth ran deeper than ink on paper.
"And if I say no?" Harper challenged softly, testing his boundaries.

Gabriel leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, sending a hot shiver down her spine.
"You won't," he whispered. "Because you're just as addicted to survival as I am to power."
