Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

VIRAL HOOK: "She won the bet, but she uncovered a death sentence."

"MR. HART, NO!" Leo screamed, hurling his body forward.

BANG!

A shot shattered the air. But it wasn't Julian's gun that had fired.

A red laser dot instantly appeared right on Julian’s chest. Before he could pull his trigger, a high-caliber sniper round tore through the industrial glass skylight fifty feet above them, shattering the ceiling into a rain of razor-sharp crystal.

The bullet slammed directly into Julian’s silver revolver, knocking it out of his hand and blowing two of his fingers cleanly off in a burst of blood and metal fragments.

Julian let out a gut-wrenching howl of pain, staggering back into Vane’s arms as blood splattered onto his pristine white shirt.

"SNIPER!" Vane bellowed, pulling his weapon. "GET THE BOSS COVERED! SHUT THE DOORS!"

Chaos erupted instantly. The crowd of criminals scattered like roaches when a light was flipped on. Gunfire began to echo from the upper rafters of the complex. Men screamed, chairs overturned, and the heavy iron doors were slammed shut, locking everyone inside a death trap.

Amidst the screaming and gunfire, Cyrus didn't attack Maisie.

Instead, the moment the sniper shot echoed, Cyrus let out a fierce, protective roar. He leapt over Maisie's body, standing tall directly in front of her, his massive frame shielding her small torso from the falling glass and stray bullets.

"Leo!" Maisie cried out, her hands reaching into the dusty air, blinded not just by her sightlessness, but by the thick cloud of concrete dust filling the room. "Leo, where are you?!"

"Maisie, stay down!" Leo screamed, crawling through the dirt toward her while bullets whizzed inches above his head.

Suddenly, the massive steel doors at the far end of the arena didn't just open—they were blown off their hinges by a tactical breach charge.

BOOM!

A cloud of black smoke rolled into the arena. Out from the smoke stepped six heavily armed men clad in unmarked black tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and suppressed assault rifles. They weren't mobsters. They moved with military precision, clearing angles with cold, robotic efficiency.

"Target identified," the lead tactical operator radioed into his headset, his voice amplified through a throat mic. "Subject: Maisie Doyle. The dog is with her. Terminate all secondary witnesses. Secure the child alive."

"Julian!" Vane screamed, dragging the bleeding mob boss behind a heavy concrete barrier. "Who the hell are these guys?! They aren't federal cops!"

Julian clutched his bloody hand, his face pale from shock and blood loss. "The Syndicate's cleanup crew..." he hissed through gritted teeth. "They aren't here for the money. They're here to erase Arthur Doyle's legacy..."

Julian looked across the smoke-filled dirt floor.

The tactical team was advancing on Maisie. One operator raised his rifle, aiming directly at Leo, who was crawling toward his sister.

"NO!" Maisie screamed.

She didn't run. She didn't hide.

Maisie reached down, grabbed her tuning fork, and struck it against the metal frame of Cyrus’s cage with all her strength.

PINGGGGGGGGG!

The sharp, resonant pitch pierced through the sound of gunfire and screaming.

Cyrus’s eyes flared with a terrifying, demonic red light. The acoustic frequency unlocked something deep within the dog’s trained subconscious—a battle command hidden deep inside his genetic code.

Cyrus didn't just charge; he became a blur of black and tan fur.

He launched himself through the smoke, clearing fifteen feet in a single bound. Before the lead operator could adjust his rifle, Cyrus’s jaws clamped around the soldier's throat armor, crushing the Kevlar and the windpipe beneath it with a sickening crunch.

The soldier went down hard, dropping his weapon.

"FIRE! FIRE ON THE CANINE!" another operator yelled.

"CYRUS, DOWN!" Maisie shouted, her voice cutting through the noise.

The dog instantly dropped low, ducking beneath a hail of suppressive fire, and swept the second operator’s legs out with a brutal, low-body tackle.

In the middle of the nightmare, Julian Hart watched from behind the concrete barrier, his eyes wide in disbelief.

The child wasn't just controlling the dog. The child was commanding an acoustic weapon capable of dismantling an elite military unit in pitch darkness.

And then, through the smoke and flashbangs, a figure walked through the destroyed front doors.

He wore an expensive trench coat over a clinical white suit. In his hand, he held a black metallic cylinder that hummed with a dangerous, glowing blue light—a portable shock-frequency jammer.

Maisie froze. Her ears twitched. She pulled her hands back to her chest, her small body trembling violently for the first time since the night began.

"That sound..." Maisie whispered, her voice cracking with pure horror. "That's... that's Daddy's watch..."

The man in the white suit stepped over the fallen soldier, stopping ten feet from the little girl. He lowered his dark sunglasses, revealing milky, sightless eyes just like Maisie's.

"Hello, my little songbird," Arthur Doyle said, his voice echoing through the ruined arena. "Thank you for finding my dog."
