Chapter 7 - ECHOES IN THE DARK

VIRAL HOOK: "In complete darkness, sight is a curse. The blind girl became the ultimate hunter."
The arena descended into absolute, suffocating blackness.
"NIGHT VISION ON! GO! GO!" the tactical commander shouted through the darkness.
"DO NOT USE NIGHT VISION, YOU FOOLS!" Arthur screamed, but it was too late.
Vane, operating on Julian's signal, pulled the pin on his flashbang and lobbed it straight into the center of the tactical squad.
BANG-FLASH!
A blinding white explosion of ten million candela ripped through the dark. To men wearing high-gain night-vision goggles, the flash was like throwing a grenade directly into their retinas. The soldiers let out blood-curdling screams as their optic nerves burned, dropping their rifles and clutching their eyes in agonizing blindness.
"MY EYES! I CAN'T SEE! I CAN'T SEE!"
In the total darkness, while fully trained soldiers were stumbling, screaming, and firing wildly into the walls, one person moved with absolute, silent grace.
Maisie.
She didn't need light. She had never used light.
CLICK.
Maisie tapped her white cane against the concrete floor once.
In her mind, the soundwave traveled outward, bouncing off the brick walls, the heavy steel beams, the body armor of the soldiers, and the outline of her father. The whole room mapped itself out in her brain like a three-dimensional blue line drawing.
"Cyrus," Maisie whispered softly. Her voice was barely a breath, but to the dog’s hyper-sensitive ears, it was as clear as a bell. "Left side. Three steps."
Cyrus, freed from the disrupter’s frequency as the blackout cut the main generator's power supply to Arthur's unit, sprang up like a ghost in the dark.
CRUNCH.
A soldier went down screaming as Cyrus lunged from the shadows, taking him down with silent, lethal precision.
CLICK.
Maisie tapped her cane again.
"Right side. Two steps."
Cyrus pivoted instantly, leaping through the dark, dismantling the second soldier before he could even pull his sidearm trigger.
Julian Hart, crouching behind a barrier in the pitch black, listened to the chaos with a terrifying sense of awe. He heard the metallic CLICK of the child's cane, followed immediately by the heavy thud of an armed mercenary hitting the dirt.
She wasn't just surviving. She was hunting.
"Arthur Doyle!" Julian shouted into the darkness, his voice echoing off the rafters. "You underestimated two things tonight! A mob boss's pride, and a little girl's love for her brother!"
"You think you can defeat me with parlor tricks, Hart?!" Arthur screamed, frantically tapping the override buttons on his glowing cylinder, trying to reboot its battery backup. "I built this system! I am the master of sound!"
"You aren't a master of anything," a small voice spoke from directly behind him.
Arthur spun around in the dark, pointing his suppressed pistol toward the voice. "Maisie?!"
PINGGGGGGGGG!
Maisie didn't hit him with a pipe. She didn't shoot a gun. She struck her brass tuning fork directly against the solid steel cylinder in his hand.
The physical contact amplified the pitch by ten thousand percent. The exact resonant frequency of the cylinder's lithium-ion power cell hit its critical harmonic limit.

KABOOM!
The cylinder exploded in Arthur’s hand in a bright flash of blue plasma, destroying the weapon and throwing Arthur backward onto the hard dirt floor with a violent thud.
