CHAPTER 2: THE MEN BEHIND THE BARS

Within minutes, inmates from every housing block were standing around Daniel's table.

One man placed an apple beside the chocolate bar.

Another offered a packet of coffee.

Someone else gave him an unopened bag of chips.

Small things.

Worth almost nothing.

Yet inside prison, they were treasures.

Daniel stared at the growing pile.

His hands trembled.

"Why are you doing this?" he whispered.

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally an older inmate spoke.

His name was Frank.

He had spent twenty-eight years behind bars.

"I missed my daughter's last eighteen birthdays."

The room became quiet.

Another inmate stepped forward.

"I haven't seen my mother in seven years."

A third lowered his head.

"My son doesn't even know who I am anymore."

One after another, men began speaking.

Hardened criminals.

Gang members.

Former robbers.

Men covered in scars and tattoos.

Yet behind every prison number was a father.

A son.

A husband.

A human being carrying regret.

Daniel listened as story after story filled the cafeteria.

For the first time, nobody was pretending to be tough.

Nobody was trying to be feared.

The masks were gone.

Even some guards stood silently watching.

Then Bear spoke again.

The giant's voice shook.

"My little girl died while I was in here."

The entire room turned toward him.

"I never got to say goodbye."

Silence.

Heavy silence.

Bear wiped his eyes.

The toughest man in prison was crying.

And suddenly dozens of other men were doing the same.

Years of pain.

Years of guilt.

Years of loneliness.

Everything poured out at once.

Then someone began singing.

Softly.

Almost awkwardly.

"Happy Birthday to you..."

Another voice joined.

Then another.

Within seconds, more than two hundred inmates were singing together.

The sound echoed through concrete walls.

Guards stopped moving.

Kitchen workers stared.

Even the prison warden, watching through security cameras, couldn't believe what he was seeing.

For four minutes, the prison forgot about gangs.

Forgot about violence.

Forgot about hatred.

For four minutes, they were simply human beings.

And when the song ended, Daniel finally broke down.

He buried his face in his hands and cried openly.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody mocked him.

Because many of them were crying too.

May you like

Yet none of them knew that someone important had been watching everything.

And that what happened next would change Daniel's life forever.
