CHAPTER 4 – "The Child Who Was Never Supposed to Exist"

The black envelope sat on Ethan's kitchen table.
Nobody touched it.
Lily stared at the photograph inside.
Richard.
The mysterious woman.
And those seven terrifying words.
"You never found the one I feared."
For the first time since Richard's arrest...
Ethan felt afraid again.
The next morning, Ethan drove to the federal prison.
Richard had refused every visitor.
Except one.
His son.
When Ethan entered the interview room, Richard looked thinner.
Older.
But the smile on his face hadn't changed.
"You got my little surprise."
Ethan slammed the photograph onto the table.
"Who is she?"
Richard chuckled.
"The only person smarter than me."
"Tell me her name!"
Richard leaned closer to the glass.
"You've already met her."
Ethan froze.
"That's impossible."
Richard nodded slowly.
"She attended your wedding."
"She held Noah."
"She even hugged Lily."
Every memory from that day rushed through Ethan's mind.
Hundreds of guests.
Friends.
Employees.
Family.
Who could it have been?
Before Ethan could ask another question...
Richard whispered one final sentence.
"If she discovers Noah is alive..."
"...he'll disappear again."
Ethan raced home.
His heart pounded.
But the house was strangely quiet.
The front door stood open.
Lily's phone lay on the floor.
Still connected to an emergency call.
"Noah?"
No answer.
"Lily?"
Silence.
Then...
A tiny voice came from upstairs.
"Daddy?"
Ethan sprinted toward Noah's bedroom.
His son stood trembling beside the window.
"They took Mommy."
Lily was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A white rose.
Wrapped around its stem was a handwritten note.
"One child was enough."
Police searched for days.
Nothing.
No fingerprints.
No ransom demand.
No security footage.
It was as if Lily had vanished into thin air.
Then Detective Mason made a shocking discovery.
He found a hidden room beneath Richard's abandoned estate.
Inside were dozens of old files.
Every folder carried the name of a missing woman.
Every victim looked almost identical to Lily.
Blonde hair.
Blue eyes.
Same age.
Same height.
One file was still empty.
Its label read:
LILY CARTER – FINAL SUBJECT
Ethan felt sick.
"This wasn't about money..."
Detective Mason slowly nodded.
"No."
"It was an experiment."
Deep inside the room...
They discovered an old videotape.
The recording showed Richard arguing with the mysterious woman from the photograph.
Richard shouted,
"She's becoming uncontrollable!"
The woman answered calmly,
"Then we'll replace her."
Ethan's blood ran cold.
Replace her?
The tape continued.
"We've done it before."
"We can do it again."
Just then...
Noah, who had secretly followed Ethan into the evidence room, noticed something nobody else saw.
Behind one of the filing cabinets...
A tiny wooden door.
He pushed it open.
Inside was a hidden nursery.
Covered in dust.
On the wall...
Hundreds of children's drawings.
Every single one showed the same smiling woman.
But one drawing made Ethan stop breathing.
It was drawn in crayon.
A little boy stood holding hands with Lily.
Standing beside them...
Was another little boy.
Identical to Noah.
Same face.
Same smile.
Same birthmark.
Across the top, in childish handwriting, were five chilling words:
"My brother is still alive."
The room fell into complete silence.
Ethan looked at Noah.
Then back at the drawing.
Noah had always believed he was an only child.
But if the picture was real...
Somewhere out there...
Another child carried Ethan's blood.
And whoever had taken Lily...
Already knew exactly where to find him.
