Chapter 3 - The Cold Draft of Reality

The morning sun was barely hitting the glass facade of the Viento Creativo headquarters when Ricardo walked through the doors. He was nursing a brutal hangover from his birthday celebration the night before, his head pounding with every beat of his heart.

Despite the headache, he felt a smug sense of satisfaction. The party had been a success, even if Mariana had made a ridiculous scene and walked out like a spoiled child. He couldn't wait to rib Javier about it later today.

"Morning, Jefe," his receptionist, Monica, said, though her voice lacked its usual cheerful bounce. She looked remarkably pale, her eyes darting toward the glass-walled conference room.

"Morning, Monica," Ricardo mumbled, rubbing his temples. "Get me a double espresso, will you? And tell the creative team we have a review in thirty minutes."

"Um... Ricardo? You have a visitor," Monica said, pointing toward the conference room. "She's been waiting for you since 8:30 AM. She said it’s extremely urgent."

Ricardo frowned. He walked toward the conference room and peered through the glass. Sitting at the long mahogany table was Sofía, the formidable general manager of DulcePro.

Viento Creativo’s entire business model revolved around DulcePro. For six years, they had handled the branding, packaging, and marketing for the rapidly expanding Dulce Rincón bakery chain. The 80,000-peso monthly retainer was the lifeblood of his agency. It paid his rent, his employees' salaries, and the hefty mortgage on the very building he was standing in.

Ricardo immediately smoothed down his designer shirt, slapped on his best charming smile, and opened the door.

"Sofía! What a pleasant surprise," Ricardo boomed, extending his hand. "To what do I owe the honor of an early morning visit? If I’d known you were coming, I would have had some pastries from Dulce Rincón delivered."

Sofía did not stand up. She did not take his hand. She simply sat there, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit, looking at him with eyes as cold as a frozen lake.

"Sit down, Ricardo," she said.

Ricardo's smile faltered, but he quickly recovered, pulling out a chair and sitting across from her. "Everything okay? Did the new summer packaging campaign hit a snag? I assure you, my team is working around the clock—"

"There is no summer campaign," Sofía interrupted. She slid a thick, white envelope across the polished wood table. It stopped right in front of Ricardo’s hands.

"What's this?" Ricardo asked, his heart taking an uncomfortable, sudden leap.

"That is a formal notice of immediate termination of the contract between DulcePro and Viento Creativo," Sofía said calmly.

Ricardo stared at the envelope. He laughed nervously, refusing to believe what he was hearing. "Termination? Sofía, come on. This is a joke, right? We’ve been partners for six years. We built the brand identity of Dulce Rincón! You can't just terminate us. We have a contract."

"We do," Sofía agreed. "And Section 9, Paragraph 4 of that contract states that DulcePro reserves the right to terminate the relationship immediately, without a thirty-day grace period, in the event of a material breach of professional standards or failure to meet deadlines."

"But we haven't breached anything!" Ricardo protested, his voice rising, his hangover completely forgotten as adrenaline flooded his system. "Our deliverables are always on time!"

"Last month, your team submitted the promotional graphics for the Father's Day campaign three days late," Sofía said, her voice completely flat. "We chose to overlook it at the time as a gesture of goodwill. However, under the strict terms of our agreement, it constitutes a material breach. We are exercising our right to terminate immediately."

Ricardo felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at her, his face turning an ashen grey. "Sofía, please. You can't do this. DulcePro is eighty percent of our revenue. If you pull this account... I have twelve employees. I have a commercial mortgage. I can't make payroll next week without your monthly retainer!"

"That is no longer our concern," Sofía said, standing up and smoothing her skirt. "All creative assets, design files, and brand materials belonging to Dulce Rincón must be transferred to our servers by 5:00 PM today. If they are not, our legal team will file a lawsuit for withholding proprietary corporate property."

"Who authorized this?" Ricardo demanded, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "Is it the Board? Let me speak to the owner of DulcePro! I know it’s a holding company, but there has to be a majority shareholder. Let me talk to them! I can fix this. I'll personally apologize for whatever went wrong!"

Sofía paused at the door of the conference room. She turned back to look at him, a tiny, almost imperceptible smirk playing on her lips.

"The owner of DulcePro is fully aware of this decision, Ricardo," she said quietly. "In fact, she was the one who personally ordered it."

"She?" Ricardo blinked. "Who is she? Just give me her name! I'll call her right now!"

"You already have her number," Sofía said. "But I highly doubt she wants to speak to you."

Without another word, Sofía turned and walked out of the office, leaving Ricardo standing in the silent conference room, clutching the white envelope as his entire world began to crumble around him.
