Chapter 4 - The Crack in the Shield

At 1:00 PM, Javier sat in his private office at the construction firm where he worked as a senior civil engineer. His head was a mess.

He had tried calling Mariana fifty times since she drove off the night before, but every call went straight to voicemail. He had sent countless texts, ranging from angry demands to pathetic apologies, but none of them had been marked as "read."

He had slept terribly on the couch in their guest room, having had to take a taxi home from the restaurant after being left stranded like a fool.

Suddenly, his office door opened, and his assistant, Claudia, walked in. She looked incredibly uncomfortable, holding a thick folder in her hands.

"Javier? A courier just dropped this off for you," she said, placing the folder on his desk. "He said it required an immediate signature."

Javier frowned, looking at the professional, heavy-stock paper folder. On the front, embossed in gold ink, was the logo of a prominent family law firm in Guadalajara: Martínez & Associates.

A cold knot formed in Javier's stomach.

He opened the folder. The very first page made his breath hitch in his throat.

IN THE FAMILY COURT OF THE STATE OF JALISCO PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE PETITIONER: MARIANA GÓMEZ CASTILLO RESPONDENT: JAVIER ORTEGA RUIZ

"No," Javier whispered, his hand shaking as he turned the pages. "No, no, no. She’s insane. She’s completely lost her mind."

He flipped to the back of the document. Appended to the petition was a copy of their prenuptial agreement—an agreement Javier had happily signed eight years ago when Mariana’s business was small, thinking he was the one with the stable, high-paying career as an engineer.

But over the years, Mariana's bakery empire had exploded, while his salary had remained relatively stagnant. The prenup was ironclad. It stated that all assets acquired before and during the marriage through their respective businesses remained entirely separate.

The beautiful house they lived in? Purchased under Mariana's corporate entity.

The luxury cars they drove? Registered under her company name.

If this divorce went through, Javier would walk away with nothing but his personal bank account and his clothes.

Before he could even process the shock, his cell phone began to ring violently on his desk. The caller ID showed Ricardo's name.

Javier swiped the screen, pressing the phone to his ear. "Ricardo, look, I can't talk right now, Mariana is actually—"

"Javier! You need to help me!" Ricardo's voice was hysterical, completely stripped of its usual arrogant bluster. He sounded like a man drowning. "They cut me off, Javi! DulcePro terminated my contract this morning! They cited a minor deadline delay from last month and pulled the entire retainer!"

Javier sat up straight, his mind spinning. "What? DulcePro terminated you? How is that possible?"

"I don't know!" Ricardo panicked. "I tried to talk to Sofía, but she treated me like garbage. She said the owner personally ordered it. Javier, if I lose this account, Viento Creativo is finished! I can't pay my staff next week. The bank is already threatening to foreclose on my office building because of our outstanding loan. I need you to talk to Mariana!"

"Talk to Mariana?" Javier asked, his voice cracking. "What does Mariana have to do with this?"

"She must know someone at DulcePro!" Ricardo pleaded. "She’s in the bakery business. DulcePro is the holding company for Dulce Rincón! Mariana has been running Dulce Rincón for years. She must have a relationship with the executives there! Please, Javi, ask her to make a call. Ask her to intercede for me. I’ll do whatever they want. I'll drop my rates. Just don't let them ruin me!"

Javier looked down at the divorce papers sitting on his desk.

"Ricardo... Mariana just served me with divorce papers," Javier said, his voice completely hollow.

There was a dead silence on the other end of the line.

"What?" Ricardo finally breathed. "Why? Because of... because of last night?"

"Yes," Javier said, a sudden wave of anger washing over him. "Because you couldn't keep your mouth shut! I told you, Ricardo! I told you she was getting tired of your jokes, but you just had to keep pushing it! Now she’s divorcing me, and she’s going to take everything!"

"But... but that’s crazy!" Ricardo stammered, though his voice was laced with guilt. "It was just a joke! She’s ruining our lives over a joke? No, this is ridiculous. We need to go see her. We need to confront her together. She’s just emotional. Once we sit down and talk to her, she’ll calm down. She has to!"

Javier stared at the gold-embossed logo on the folder. He remembered the cold, unwavering look in Mariana's eyes in the driveway of the restaurant.

He didn't think she was emotional.

He thought she was done.

"Come to my office, Ricardo," Javier said quietly. "We need to figure out what to do."
