Chapter 5 - The Knock at the DoorThe sound of the front doorbell reverberated through the basement floorboards, cutting through the heavy, stagnant air of Robert's workshop.

Robert froze, the revolver still gripped tightly in his sweating hand. His eyes darted from the open safe to the basement stairs, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

"They're here," Robert whispered, panic stripping the last vestiges of color from his face. "They tracked the hospital's diagnostic upload. I told you... I told you we couldn't trust the system."

"That's not them, Robert," I said, backing away slowly toward the shadows of the workbench, keeping my eyes locked on the gun. "That's the police. Dr. Lawson filed an emergency endangerment report the moment the CT scan confirmed the foreign object. You're finished."

Before Robert could reply, the heavy oak front door upstairs splintered with a deafening crash.

Heavy boots thudded against the hardwood floor of the hallway. Shouts echoed down the stairwell.

"Federal Marshals! Nobody move! Clear the perimeter!"

Robert’s head snapped toward the stairs. A manic, desperate light flashed in his eyes. He didn't drop the weapon. Instead, he scrambled backward into the open safe, his fingers clawing furiously at a hidden compartment deep inside the steel frame.

"Robert, don't be stupid! Drop the gun!" I screamed, lunging forward as a tactical flashlight beam cut through the darkness of the basement stairwell.

Bang.

The gunshot was deafening in the confined concrete room, the sound exploding against my eardrums and sending a shockwave through the air. A cloud of plaster dust rained down from the ceiling as a bullet lodged itself inches from my head into the wooden beam.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!"

The basement stairs flooded with heavily armored tactical officers, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting a web of crimson dots across Robert’s chest.

Robert stood frozen, his hand still inside the safe, the black revolver slipping from his numb fingers and clattering hard against the concrete floor.

"Don't move! Hands behind your head! Down on the ground!"

Two officers swarmed him, tackling him to the cold floor, slamming steel handcuffs onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.

As they dragged him up and toward the stairs, Robert locked eyes with me one last time over his shoulder. His face wasn't angry anymore. It was entirely blank, hollowed out by the terrifying reality of what he had unleashed.

"You didn't save her, Elena," he muttered as they hauled him past me into the light. "Opening that box... you just woke them up."
