Chapter 9 - The Final StandThe blinding white light and earsplitting roar of the flashbang left me disoriented, gasping for air as the acrid smell of sulfur filled the room.

Through the haze of white smoke, two masked figures in black tactical gear surged through the doorway. Agent Vance fired twice from his position behind the overturned medical cart, his weapon roaring in the confined space. One of the intruders stumbled backward into the doorframe, dropping his assault rifle with a heavy clatter, but the second intruder pressed forward, leveling a silenced pistol directly at Agent Vance.

A muffled shot echoed, and Agent Vance slumped hard against the wall, sliding down into the shadows.

"Agent Vance!" I screamed, lunging forward blindly.

The remaining intruder ignored me, his dark, unblinking eyes fixed entirely on Maya, who was huddled against the headboard, trembling uncontrollably. He reached into his tactical vest, pulling out a specialized containment cylinder designed to secure the extracted vault core.

"Where is it?" the man demanded through his tactical respirator, his voice distorted and metallic. "Where is the core?"

"Get away from her!" I roared, the maternal fury inside me completely overriding human survival instinct.

I grabbed the heavy metal IV pole standing beside the bed, swinging it with all my remaining strength like a baseball bat. The heavy steel base caught the intruder squarely across the side of his helmet with a resounding thwack, sending him stumbling sideways into the medical monitor array. Monitors sparked and died, plunging the corner of the room into total darkness.

"Maya! Run!" I yelled, grabbing my daughter’s arm and pulling her off the bed.

We bolted toward the adjoining bathroom, slamming the heavy wooden door behind us and throwing the interior slide lock just as a heavy fist hammered against the outer wood panel, splintering the frame.

"Mom, I'm scared, I can't breathe," Maya sobbed, pressing herself into the narrow corner between the shower and the sink.

"Look at me, baby," I said, holding her face in my hands, my voice fierce and steady despite the blood dripping from a cut on my forehead. "We are going to make it out of this. Your father's lies end tonight. Our freedom starts right now."

I grabbed the heavy porcelain soap dish from the sink, smashing it against the small frosted glass window that led out onto the exterior maintenance ledge overlooking the hospital courtyard.

Below us, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the night sky. Dozens of federal backup cruisers and tactical units had finally swarmed the main entrance, sealing off the perimeter completely.

I pushed the broken glass outward, cold autumn air rushing in to fill our lungs.

Through the shattered window, I raised my hand into the amber glow of the emergency lights, waving frantically toward the courtyard below.

A powerful tactical spotlight swept up the face of the building, locking directly onto our window in a blinding beam of hope.
