Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the HallwayRiverside Medical Center at 2:15 a.m. was a labyrinth of long, dim corridors and rhythmic medical alarms.

Following the briefing at the FBI field office, federal agents had established a secure perimeter around Maya’s private room on the fourth floor. Two armed marshals stood outside her door, their presence heavy and unyielding.

I sat in the armchair beside Maya’s hospital bed, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest. She was sleeping peacefully, her skin finally regaining some of its natural warmth now that the foreign weight had been removed from her body. The heavy charcoal hoodie was draped over a chair, replaced by a clean hospital gown.

The door to the room creaked open slightly.

Agent Vance slipped inside, closing it softly behind him. His face was stark white, etched with an urgency that made my stomach drop into freefall.

"Mrs. Thorne," he whispered, his voice laced with suppressed panic. "We have a breach."

I stood up instantly, my heart pounding against my ribs. "What? How? You said the perimeter was secure!"

"It was local law enforcement at the front desk," Vance said rapidly, pulling a encrypted tactical radio from his belt. "A local paramedic unit dispatched an emergency transfer order ten minutes ago for Room 402, citing a critical surgical complication requiring immediate transport to a secondary facility. The front desk cleared it because the transfer code matched a high-level administrative override."

My blood turned to ice. "We didn't request a transfer. Maya is staying right here."

"I know," Vance said, drawing his sidearm and clicking off the safety. "The local transport team isn't federal. They're corporate security contractors hired by the syndicate. They're already on this floor."

Before Agent Vance could reach the door, the overhead hospital lights flickered once, twice, and then completely died.

The emergency backup generators kicked in a second later, bathing the hallway in a sickly, amber-tinted glow.

Clack.

The sound of gunfire echoed from the nurse's station down the hall, sharp and terrifyingly close. Shouts and the sound of shattering glass rang out through the corridor.

"Get under the bed, Maya!" I screamed, spinning around.

Maya bolted upright, her eyes wide with sudden terror, disoriented and confused by the flashing lights and sudden violence. "Mom? What's happening?"

Before I could pull her off the mattress, the door to Room 402 blew inward with a violent crash. The heavy wood splintered as a tactical flashbang grenade bounced across the linoleum floor, hissing brightly before detonating with a blinding flash and a deafening concussive boom that sent a shockwave through the room.
