Chapter 2 - The Hospital Room & The Unspoken SecretThe ICU smelled of antiseptic and ozone. The steady beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor was the only sound keeping me anchored to reality.

Evelyn lay in the hospital bed, IV lines snaking into her wrists. Bandages wrapped her hands and feet where frostbite had begun to set in. Her golden hair was dry now, fan-spread across the white pillow.

I sat on a hard plastic chair beside her, holding her cold, bruised right hand between both of mine. I hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. My military dress uniform was wrinkled, smelling faintly of snow and hospital disinfectant.

Around 3:00 AM, her fingers twitched.

"Julian..." she breathed, her voice raspy and barely audible.

"I'm right here, Evie. I'm right here." I leaned down, pressing my forehead against her knuckles. "You're safe. The doctors said you're going to be okay. They're both in jail."

Her dark eyes fluttered open, glassy with pain medication, but intense. She tightened her grip on my hand with surprising strength.

"Julian... you can't stay here," she whispered, panicking. "You need to look... under the floorboards in Arthur’s study."

"Evie, calm down. Marcus showed the police the security footage. Victoria and Chloe are facing felony charges. They can't hurt you anymore."

"No!" She coughed, a violent, dry sound that shook her thin frame. "It’s not just about the house deed, Julian! They weren't trying to force me to sign the property away because of money! They were trying to get me out of the house before I found... what your father left behind."

I froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Two weeks ago," Evelyn whispered, tears welling in her eyes, "I was cleaning out Arthur's old desk in the library. I found a hidden key sewn into the lining of his leather journal. It opened a floor safe beneath his mahogany bookcase. Inside... there were medical reports. Julian... your father didn't die of a heart attack."

The air in the room felt suddenly thin. My father, Arthur Montgomery, had died fourteen months ago while I was deployed in Iraq. The death certificate listed his cause of death as congestive heart failure following a brief illness.

"What do the reports say, Evelyn?"

"He was being poisoned," she whispered, looking toward the hospital door as if expecting someone to burst in. "Slowly, over six months. Arsenic and thallium mixed into his evening tea. Arthur suspected it. He had his blood tested privately by an out-of-state lab. The results came back three days before he went into a coma."

My blood ran cold. "Mother..."

"Victoria gave him that tea every single night," Evelyn said, tears streaming down her bruised face. "Arthur knew he was dying. He knew he couldn't prove it in time to save himself, so he transferred every asset—the banks, the properties, the shipping company stocks—into the irrevocable trust with me as the beneficiary, knowing Victoria would try to destroy you if she got her hands on it. He left a taped confession from his doctor in that floor safe."

Before I could process the nightmare unfolding before me, the hospital door swung open.

Marcus Vance walked in, his suit coat unbuttoned, his expression dark.

"Julian," Marcus said tightly. "We have a massive problem."

"What happened?" I asked, standing up.

"Victoria and Chloe didn't stay in central booking," Marcus revealed, biting his lip. "An emergency bail hearing was convened an hour ago by Senior Circuit Judge Donald Vance."

I stared at him. "Donald Vance? Your brother?"

"Yes," Marcus said bitterly. "Donald is corrupt to the bone, and he's been on Victoria's payroll for a decade. He granted them signature bond release on 'humanitarian grounds' due to Victoria's alleged heart condition. They walked out of the police station twenty minutes ago."

"Where are they now?" I growled, my hands clenching into fists.

Marcus looked out the window toward the dark city skyline. "Donald issued an emergency injunction freezing the trust assets, claiming Arthur was of unsound mind when he created it. Victoria and a team of private security contractors are on their way back to the mansion right now to seize the property and destroy whatever evidence is left inside."
