Chapter 6 - The Trial of BetrayalTwo hours later, armed officers surrounded the granite pillars of Montgomery National Bank in downtown.

Chloe was caught red-handed in the safety deposit vault, trying to pack two duffel bags with $4 million in bearer bonds and gold bullion—assets stolen directly from my father’s emergency reserves.

As the police led her out in handcuffs, dressed in stained medical scrubs and weeping hysterically, a crowd of local reporters gathered behind the police barricades. Flashbulbs blinded the morning light.

"Julian! Julian, please!" Chloe shrieked, struggling against the officers. "Tell them it’s a mistake! I’m your sister! I grew up with you!"

I stood on the marble steps of the bank, looking down at her with zero emotion left in my heart.

"You’re not my sister, Chloe," I said clearly, loud enough for every microphone to pick up. "You’re the daughter of a murderer and a thief. And you’re going to spend the rest of your life behind bars."

Three months later.

The Federal District Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity. The trial of United States v. Victoria Montgomery, Donald Vance, and Chloe Vance had dominated national headlines for weeks.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Evelyn’s hand. Her cheeks had regained their rosy color, her skin healed, her strength returned. She wore an elegant dark blue suit, looking every bit the proud owner of the Montgomery Estate.

At the defense table sat Victoria, stripped of her designer clothes, wearing an orange orange jumpsuit, her hair gray and unstyled. Next to her sat Donald Vance, looking sunken and defeated, and Chloe, who stared at the defense table in silent terror.

The prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney David Stern, stood before the jury.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Stern began, his voice booming through the silent courtroom. "This is not merely a case of financial greed. This is a case of calculated, cold-blooded destruction. Over fifteen years, the defendants systematically poisoned Arthur Montgomery, abused his trust, attempted to murder his daughter-in-law, and tried to strip a decorated war veteran of everything his family built."

Stern pointed toward the projector screen on the courtroom wall.

"We present Exhibit A."

The lights dimmed. The jury gasped as the security video played on the massive screens—the footage of Victoria and Chloe beating Evelyn, ripping her shoes off, and tossing her into the freezing snow to die while they ate dinner inside.

Several jurors covered their mouths in horror. One woman wept silently.

Victoria glared at Evelyn with pure hatred from the defense table, but Evelyn didn't flinch. She met her gaze with quiet, unyielding courage.

Then, Stern called his surprise witness to the stand.

"The prosecution calls Marcus Vance."

Marcus took the witness stand, took the oath, and looked directly at his brother Donald.

"Marcus," Stern asked, "can you explain to the court what you discovered in the secondary offshore accounts owned by Donald Vance?"

Marcus adjusted his glasses. "Yes. Two days ago, with the assistance of Swiss authorities, we uncovered a transfer of $12 million made three years ago. That money was paid to Donald Vance by an international pharmaceutical syndicate. Donald and Victoria weren't just killing Arthur for his money... they were selling Arthur’s patented military logistics software to foreign buyers."

The courtroom erupted into utter chaos. The judge slammed his gavel repeatedly, demanding order.

Treason. It wasn't just murder and theft—it was high treason.
