Chapter 1 - THE RECKONING AT THE SERVICE DOORThe silence in the damp, grease-stained service kitchen was heavier than the desert heat I had endured for five long years.

My sister, Prudence, stood frozen, the silver platter of roasted chicken trembling violently in her French-manicured hands. Her eyes were wide, white, and swimming with sheer terror. Behind her stood our mother, Gertrude, draped in silk and heavy gold jewelry—jewelry bought with the sweat of my brow, the blisters on my hands, and the blood from my veins.

"E-Ethan?" Gertrude stammered, her voice cracking like dry wood. The color had completely drained from her face, leaving her looking like a withered ghost in an expensive dress. "You... you weren't supposed to be home until next month..."

"Is that right?" My voice was terrifyingly low, a quiet growl that vibrated off the concrete walls. "I wasn't supposed to be home. So you could keep starving my wife? So you could treat my son like a street dog while you drink five-hundred-dollar wine with strangers?"

Sarah let out a choked gasp, tears streaming down her hollow, sunken cheeks. She clutched Jamie tightly against her frail chest. My six-year-old son looked up at me with wide, terrified eyes—eyes that didn't even recognize the man who had paid for every single brick of the palace we were standing behind.

"Ethan, darling, let me explain—" Gertrude took a step forward, her voice dripping with fake, practiced honey. "Your wife... Sarah hasn't been herself. She's been mentally unstable! She preferred to stay out here! We tried to give her room inside, but she insisted—"

"LIAR!" Sarah suddenly screamed, a raw, primal sound that cut through the night air. The years of oppression, beatings, and humiliation boiled over in a single second. "You locked us out! You took my phone! You made me clean the mansion for your parties, and if I asked for a single dollar of Ethan's money, you slapped me!"

Prudence tried to sneer, covering her fear with her usual arrogance. "Ethan, don't listen to this filthy lying charity case! You know Mom only did what was best for the family estate! We had to keep up appearances for Bayside Heights high society! What would the mayor think if he saw her wearing rags inside?"

I didn't answer with words.

I took two massive strides forward, grabbed the edge of the lavish roasted chicken platter Prudence was holding, and slammed it upward.

CLANG!

The platter flew into the air, splashing hot grease, wine, and roasted meat straight onto Prudence’s custom designer gown. She shrieked in horror, stumbling backward into Gertrude.

"Ethan! Are you insane?!" Gertrude gasped, clutching her chest. "There are distinguished guests in the living room! The Mayor of Bayside Heights is here! Chief of Police Miller is here! You are embarrassing this family!"

"This isn't your family anymore," I said, stepping over the scattered food and taking Sarah’s bruised, trembling hand into mine. I dropped to my knees in front of my son. "Jamie... look at me, buddy. I'm your dad. I'm home. And nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

Jamie looked at my face, then at the dropped box of expensive toys on the floor. A tiny tear rolled down his dirty cheek. "Daddy? Are we going to eat real chicken now?"

Those six words ripped my heart completely out of my chest.

I turned back to Gertrude and Prudence. My eyes were cold, dead, and lethal. "You have ten minutes to get every single intruder out of my house. If they aren't gone, I'm going inside with the police officers sitting in your living room and showing them the back kitchen."

Gertrude's arrogance flared back up. "You wouldn't dare! The mansion deed is in my name, Ethan! You sent the money to me! Legally, you own NOTHING!"

A horrific, chilling smile spread across my face. Gertrude thought she was smart. She thought five years in Saudi Arabia had made me stupid.

"You think so, Mother?" I whispered. "Check your phone."
