Chapter 8 - THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL (THE SURPRISE ENDING)Three months had passed since the dramatic arrests at the gates of #884 Bayside Heights Estate.

The scandal had completely shattered the Vance family name. Gertrude, Prudence, and Marcus were sitting in county jail, unable to post the $1 million bail set by a judge who was sickened by the child neglect footage.

Their trial was scheduled for the following week.

With my home fully restored, I had transformed the back service kitchen into a beautiful, sunlit garden filled with white roses and marble benches—a constant symbol that light will always conquer darkness. Jamie was enrolled in the top private school in Bayside, gaining weight, smiling every day, and showing a brilliant talent for drawing. Sarah had regained her health, her confidence, and her beauty, managing a newly established charity foundation funded by me to help abused mothers and children.

One afternoon, my lawyer Arthur called me to his high-rise office downtown.

"Ethan, you need to see this," Arthur said, his face grave as he pushed a dusty, sealed manila envelope across his polished mahogany desk.

"What is this?" I asked, picking up the heavy envelope.

"During the discovery phase for Gertrude's criminal trial, state investigators audited the old family estate records from thirty years ago," Arthur explained softly. "They pulled your late father’s original, unredacted Last Will and Testament from the state vault."

My heart skipped a beat. My father had passed away when I was just ten years old. I had always been told by Gertrude that my father died penniless, leaving us with nothing but debts.

I broke the wax seal on the envelope and pulled out the yellowed legal parchment.

As my eyes scanned the black ink, my jaw slowly dropped in absolute disbelief.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF RICHARD VANCE: "I leave my entire global trust estate, valued at $15,000,000, solely to my firstborn son, ETHAN VANCE. Gertrude Vance shall receive no inheritance due to her proven infidelity..."

Attached to the Will was a DNA paternity test from twenty-eight years ago.

I read the blood test results, and my entire world tilted on its axis.

The DNA test proved beyond a shadow of a doubt:

Ethan Vance was the TRUE, legitimate biological son of multi-millionaire industrialist Richard Vance.

Prudence Vance and Marcus Vance were NOT Richard Vance’s children. They were the biological children of Gertrude and her secret lover—a low-level local gambler.

Gertrude had known this thirty years ago!

When my father died, Gertrude had hidden his real Will, forged a fake one, stolen my $15 million inheritance, and spent it all on her illegitimate children, Prudence and Marcus!

When the money ran out five years ago, she forced ME—the real heir she despised because I reminded her of my late father—to go to Saudi Arabia and perform backbreaking labor to support HER and HER secret lover's children!

She didn't just hate Sarah.

She hated ME from the day I was born because I was the rightful owner of everything she had stolen!

I sat in the chair, a deep, bitter laugh escaping my lips.

"She made me suffer in the desert for five years..." I whispered, looking at the documents. "...to pay for the lives of children who weren't even my father's."

"Ethan," Arthur said quietly. "With these documents, the court is seizing every asset Gertrude ever touched. Furthermore, the district attorney is adding 'Federal Inheritance Fraud' and 'Forgery' to her charges. She, Prudence, and Marcus are looking at thirty years in federal prison. They will spend the rest of their lives behind bars."

Two days later, I visited Gertrude in the county jail visitation room.

She sat across from me behind the reinforced glass, wearing a orange jumpsuit, her hair gray and unkempt, looking older than time itself.

When she saw me, she tried to glare at me with her old malice. "Have you come to gloat, Ethan? You've ruined my life! Marcus and Prudence are crying in their cells every night!"

I didn't get angry. I didn't raise my voice.

I simply pressed the thirty-year-old DNA test and my father's real Will against the glass.

Gertrude’s eyes locked onto the documents.

In a single second, her face turned paler than it had on the night I returned from Saudi Arabia. Her breath hitched in her throat. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably.

"You... you found it..." she whimpered, her voice barely a squeak.

"My father left me fifteen million dollars, Gertrude," I said softly into the telephone receiver. "You stole my childhood. You stole my father's legacy. You sent me to freeze and burn in foreign lands while you fed your secret lover's children with my father's fortune."

"Ethan... please..." Gertrude began to sob, slamming her frail hands against the glass. "I did it for my children! Please don't tell Prudence and Marcus! They think Richard was their father! It will break them!"

I stood up from my chair, looking down at her with total, unyielding detachment.

"I already told them," I said coldly. "Ten minutes ago."

Gertrude gasped, gasping for air as if she had been struck by lightning.

"They know they aren't Vances," I added smoothly. "And because they aren't legal heirs, every penny of the trust defense fund you set up for their lawyers has been frozen. They are getting public defenders. And they blame YOU for destroying their lives."

"NO! NO! ETHAN, PLEASE! SPARE MY BABIES!" Gertrude screamed, banging her forehead against the glass, hysterical tears washing over her face.

I placed my hand gently against the glass, right over her weeping face.

"Five years ago, you locked my wife and child in the dark behind my house," I whispered. "Now, you will spend the next thirty years in the dark behind iron bars. Goodbye, Gertrude."

I turned my back on her screams and walked out into the blinding, beautiful sunlight.

Outside the courthouse, Sarah and Jamie were waiting for me in our car. Jamie ran up to me, jumping into my arms, laughing bright and free. Sarah wrapped her arms around my waist, kissing my cheek.

I looked back at the cold, gray walls of the prison one last time, then looked at my true family.

The desert heat had burned away my past, but today, my legacy had finally begun.
