Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Penthouse

"Elena, get Lily! Now!" Adrian shouted, pulling a hidden firearm from his desk drawer.
The sound of shattering glass echoed from the living room. Heavy, synchronized footsteps moved through the dark apartment. These weren't regular thieves; these were professional mercenaries.
Elena rushed into the bedroom, scooping a crying Lily into her arms. "Mommy, it’s dark," Lily whimpered, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
"Shh, baby, it’s okay. Mommy’s got you," Elena whispered, tears streaming down her face.
Adrian guarded the bedroom door, firing two shots down the hallway as shadowy figures advanced. "Celeste knows we found it," Adrian shouted over the gunfire. "She had a tracker on the dress or the drive. We have to get to the private elevator!"
A smoke grenade rolled into the hallway, filling the penthouse with blinding, suffocating gas. Elena coughed, trying to shield Lily’s face.
Suddenly, a massive figure burst through the balcony window behind Elena. A mercenary grabbed her arm, trying to rip Lily away from her.
"No! Let her go!" Elena screamed, using all her strength to kick and scratch the attacker. She bit the mercenary’s hand hard enough to draw blood. He roared in pain, throwing Elena to the floor.
Adrian turned and fired, neutralizing the attacker instantly. But the distraction allowed another mercenary to strike Adrian from behind with a heavy iron baton. Adrian collapsed, the gun skittering across the floor.
From the shadows of the living room, a figure stepped forward, illuminated by the flashing red emergency lights.
It was Celeste Whitmore. She was wearing a black leather trench coat, her beautiful face twisted into a mask of pure malice.
"Looking for this, Adrian?" Celeste purred, holding up the encrypted flash drive. Her men had already pulled it from the laptop.
"You're a murderer, Celeste," Adrian groaned, spitting blood as he tried to stand. "You killed my mother."
"Your mother was a nosy old woman who couldn't mind her own business," Celeste sneered. She walked over to where Elena was crouching over Lily. Celeste raised her designer heel and slammed it down onto Elena’s hand, crushing her fingers.
Elena screamed in agony but refused to move away from her daughter.

"You ruined my life, you filthy little servant," Celeste hissed at Elena. "Tonight, you and your bastard child die in a tragic penthouse fire. And Adrian will be framed for the murder-suicide after he lost his mind over his ruined empire."
Celeste turned to her men. "Tie them up. Pour the gasoline."
