Chapter 3 - THE WEB OF DECEITAdrenaline surged through my veins. As Mark brought the metal bar swinging down toward my skull, I dove to the left. The crowbar smashed into the marble countertop, sending sparks into the dark.

I kicked out with all my strength, hitting Mark squarely in the kneecap. He groaned, staggering backward into the dining table. Seizing the second of distraction, I grabbed Rick by his collar, dragging my disoriented dog through the back kitchen door, slamming and locking it behind us, and sprinting wildly out into the pouring rain.

The night air was freezing, pounding rain washing over us as Rick and I sprinted through the dense woods surrounding my suburban home. Behind us, I heard the crash of glass—Mark breaking through the back door, shouting my name into the stormy night.

We ran until my lungs burned and my legs felt like lead, finally collapsing behind an abandoned ranger station at the edge of the state park. I held Rick tight against my chest, feeling his violent shivers slowly calm down as the high-pitched noise faded into the distance.

"Good boy, Rick... good boy," I sobbed into his damp fur. He nudged his cold nose against my neck, whimpering softly. He hadn't been mad. He hadn't been going senile. He was defending me from a ghost that had been living above my head for months.

As my breathing stabilized, I pulled out my phone. The screen was still black, but as I pressed the power button repeatedly, it suddenly rebooted. A flood of delayed notifications flashed across the screen.

There were twenty unread messages from an unknown number, sent over the last three weeks.

I opened the text chain. Every message contained detailed notes of my daily routine, along with disturbing instructions:

“Subject is isolated. Continue the gaslighting.”

“Phase 2 ready. Ensure he questions his sanity before the transfer.”

My heart stopped. Mark wasn't working alone.

Then came the final message, received just ten minutes ago from the unknown number:“Mark, you idiot! The dog blew our cover. Execute Protocol B immediately. Do NOT let Leo contact Detective Vance.”

Detective Vance... the lead investigator who handled my brother's 'death' three years ago.
