Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Penthouse

SHE COMPLIED WITH HIS RULES, BUT SHE REFUSED TO BOW. THE PRIVATE DINNER WHERE THE LIFEGUARD PROVED SHE WASN'T AFRAID OF THE MONSTER.
Three days had passed, and Maya felt like a ghost haunting a billionaire's mausoleum.
She had been given a palatial suite on the third floor overlooking the ocean, filled with designer clothes she hadn't asked for and high-end skincare to soothe her sun-damaged skin. But she refused to wear the silk dresses. Instead, she chose a pair of simple black trousers and a structured white linen shirt from the closet—practical clothing. Clothing she could run in.
Leonora refused to eat or sleep unless Maya was in the room. The trauma of the near-drowning and the hospital ambush had locked the child’s voice away again; she hadn't spoken a word since whispering Don't go in the ER.
"She needs a doctor, not an army," Maya said that evening, walking uninvited into Matteo’s private penthouse study.
The room was dark, illuminated only by the amber glow of the city skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows and the monitors displaying real-time security feeds of the estate. Matteo sat behind a massive desk of petrified wood, a glass of scotch in his hand, a mountain of financial ledgers spread before him.
He didn't look up. "She has the best trauma specialists in the country arriving tomorrow disguised as interior decorators. I do not need the press or my enemies knowing my daughter is fragile."
"She isn't fragile, she's terrified!" Maya raised her voice, walking right up to the desk and slamming her hand down on the polished wood. "And she's terrified because her father lives like a warlord in a glass cage. She needs to touch the grass, Matteo. She needs to feel safe, not surrounded by men with submachine guns."
Matteo slowly set his glass down. The air in the room grew heavy, the temperature dropping instantly. He stood up, his towering height forcing Maya to tilt her head back. He walked around the desk, stopping mere inches from her.
"You forget yourself, Miss Hart," he murmured, his voice dangerous, a velvet purr over a razor blade. "People have been fed to the sharks in that bay for speaking to me in that tone."
"Then call the sharks," Maya whispered back, her chest rising and falling rapidly. She didn't take a step back. "Because I’ve dealt with undertows worse than you. You think you’re the master of the sea because you own the boats? You’re just a man hiding behind a badge of terror because you’re scared to death that someone will see you care about that little girl."
For a long, agonizing second, Maya thought she had pushed him too far. Matteo’s hand twitched, his fingers flexing. He reached out, his large, calloused hand moving toward her throat.
Maya didn't flinch. She watched his eyes.
Instead of wrapping around her neck, Matteo’s fingers brushed a stray lock of hair away from her cheek, his thumb lingering for a fraction of a second against her jawline. The touch wasn't brutal; it was hot, electric, and unexpectedly intense.
"You have a very dangerous amount of courage," Matteo murmured, his amber eyes darkening as they tracked down to her lips before returning to her eyes. "Or you are simply foolish."
"I'm a lifeguard, Vance. My job is to look at danger and dive in anyway," she said, her voice dropping to a breathless whisper.
Before Matteo could answer, the security monitor behind him flashed red. A sharp, rhythmic beep echoed through the room.
Matteo turned instantly, his demeanor shifting from seductive predator to military commander in a heartbeat. He looked at the camera feed of the western perimeter wall. The thermal imaging showed three heat signatures moving through the blind spot near the cliffs.
"They're inside," Matteo said, pulling a heavy silver pistol from his waistband. He looked back at Maya, his expression deadlier than she had ever seen it. "Get Leo to the panic room behind my closet. Do not open it for anyone but me. If anyone else tries to enter... use this."
He slapped a small, sleek pistol into her hand. It was cold, heavy, and smelled of oil.

"I don't shoot people," Maya said, staring at the weapon.
"You do tonight if they try to touch my daughter," Matteo said, and then he vanished into the dark hallway.
