Chapter 6 - The Queen of the Underworld (The Ultimate Twist)

THE JAW-DROPPING TWIST ENDING: THEY THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST A POOR LIFEGUARD. UNTIL THE TRUE HEAD OF THE UNDERWORLD STOOD UP.
The dark water didn't frighten Maya. It was her home.
Even with a bullet wound in her shoulder and blood clouding the salt water around her, her body knew how to survive. She didn't fight the current; she used it, letting the tide carry her away from the immediate blast zone of the pier until she could pull herself up onto a rusty ladder three hundred yards down the harbor.
When she dragged herself onto the wooden planks of an abandoned slip, the storm was beginning to clear. The gunfire had stopped.
She walked slowly, clutching her bleeding shoulder, back toward the main terminal. Sirens were wailing in the distance—the police were finally arriving, now that the battle was over.
In the center of the yard, surrounded by dozens of armed men who were now kneeling on the wet asphalt, stood Matteo. Alejandro Corban lay dead at his feet. Matteo looked broken, his chest heaving, his face pale as he stared at the dark water where Maya had disappeared.
"Search the bay," Matteo was roaring at his men, his voice breaking. "Bring me every diver in the city! If you don't find her, I will burn this entire harbor to the ground!"
"You can call off the divers, Matteo," Maya’s voice cut through the damp air.
Matteo spun around. His amber eyes went wide, a mixture of disbelief, profound relief, and something akin to worship washing over his harsh features. He took three massive strides toward her, grabbing her by her uninjured shoulder and pulling her into a fierce, desperate embrace. He buried his face in her wet hair, his body shaking.
"You're alive," he whispered, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "You stupid, brave woman... you took a bullet for me."
Maya let him hold her for a long moment, feeling the steady, frantic beating of his heart against her cheek. Then, slowly, deliberately, she stepped out of his embrace.
The warmth in her hazel eyes was gone. In its place was a cold, calculating brilliance that Matteo had never seen before.
She reached into her wet waistband and pulled out a small, waterproof encrypted flash drive—the one she had pulled from Marco’s pocket right before Matteo shot him in the panic room, the one she had kept hidden through the entire ordeal.
"I didn't take a bullet for you, Matteo," Maya said, her voice dropping into a smooth, commanding register that made the surrounding mafia soldiers instantly straighten their spines. "I took a bullet to ensure Alejandro Corban didn't die before he transferred the routing codes for the offshore accounts."
Matteo froze, his amber eyes narrowing as he looked at the flash drive, then at the woman he thought he knew. "What are you talking about?"
From the shadows of the containers, three black luxury sedans pulled up, their engines purring. The doors opened, and out stepped the highest-ranking capos of the Vance family—the elders who had supposedly been in hiding. They didn't walk toward Matteo. They walked toward Maya, bowing their heads in deep respect.
"The operation is complete, Boss," the oldest capo said, stepping forward and placing a dry, warm wool coat over Maya’s soaking shoulders. "The Corban cartel has been fully liquidated. Their assets have been routed to the Glendale trust."
Matteo’s world shattered in a single second. He looked from his men to Maya. "The Glendale trust... your mother. She doesn't have Alzheimer’s."
"My mother is Elena Hart," Maya said, a cold, beautiful smile finally breaking across her lips. "The woman who founded this syndicate thirty years ago before your father betrayed her and drove her into hiding. You thought you ran this city, Matteo? You only ran the pieces we allowed you to have."
"The beach..." Matteo whispered, the pieces falling into place with terrifying clarity. "The drowning..."
"Leonora was never in danger," Maya said, her voice soft but absolute. "I grew up in these waters. I know every undercurrent, every wave cycle. I timed it perfectly. I needed a way into your house, into your trust, and into your bed without your counter-intelligence team suspecting a thing. What better way than playing the poor, heroic lifeguard who saved your only child?"
Matteo stared at her, his heart tearing between the furious rage of betrayal and the intoxicating awe of her brilliant, ruthless deception. He raised his gun, pointing it at her chest. "I should kill you right here."
Maya took a step closer, pressing her chest right against the muzzle of his weapon. Her eyes burned with a dark, magnetic passion. "You could. But you won't. Because over the last four days, you realized something you never wanted to admit, Il Carceriere."
She reached up, her wet fingers tracing his jawline, pulling his face down to hers until their lips were almost touching.
"You realized that I am the only woman in this world who can match your darkness. You don't want to kill me, Matteo. You want to rule beside me."
Matteo looked into the eyes of the woman who had completely outmaneuvered him, the woman who had saved his life just to steal his empire. Slowly, his hand lowered. A dark, dangerous laugh rumbled in his chest as he realized she was absolutely right.

He didn't pull away. Instead, he wrapped his hand around the back of her neck, pulling her into a hard, possessive kiss right there in the rain, surrounded by the ruins of their enemies.
The poor lifeguard was gone. The Queen of Los Angeles had just taken her throne.
