Chapter 4 - The Sterling Offer

The ride in the back of the Maybach was completely silent. Jordan woke up, gazing in absolute awe at the starlight roof lining and the pristine leather seats. Marcus sat rigidly, feeling out of place, his dirty jeans staining the immaculate cream-colored leather.
Instead of driving to the Alpine mansion, the limousine pulled up to a massive, state-of-the-art commercial complex on the outskirts of the city. The sign outside read: STERLING LOGISTICS & ADVANCED ENGINEERING.
Charles led Marcus and a sleepy Jordan inside, bypassing security doors that required biometric scans. They walked down a long glass corridor that overlooked a massive, breathtaking workshop. Through the glass, Marcus saw millions of dollars worth of equipment—hydraulic lifts, diagnostic computers that looked like they belonged to NASA, and rows of high-end luxury vehicles, armored transport trucks, and rare vintage sports cars.
"What is this place?" Marcus breathed, his inner mechanic instantly awakened. His eyes darted to a disassembled classic Aston Martin engine in the corner, his fingers twitching with the urge to touch it.
"This is my private sanctuary," Charles said, standing next to him. "Sterling Logistics handles high-security transport across the globe. We build armored vehicles for diplomats, executives, and governments. And over there," he pointed to a glass-walled office overlooking the entire floor, "is the office of the Chief Logistics Engineer."
Marcus nodded, impressed. "Whoever works there has the best job in the world."
Charles turned to face Marcus fully, slipping his hands into his pockets. "The position is currently vacant. The previous chief engineer was caught selling proprietary armored designs to a criminal syndicate. He was the one who orchestrated Lily's kidnapping to blackmail me. He is currently in a federal holding cell."
Marcus’s jaw dropped. "That's... that's terrible. But why are you showing me this?"
"Because I need someone I can trust with my life, my company, and my daughter’s safety," Charles said firmly. "I had my team do a background check on you, Marcus. You worked at Henderson’s Auto Repair for years. I spoke to Mr. Henderson himself tonight. He told me you are a mechanical prodigy. He said you have a flawless moral compass and can fix things engineers with master's degrees shake their heads at."
Charles stepped forward, pulling a document from his coat pocket and laying it on the glass railing.
"Six-figure starting salary. Full medical benefits for you and Jordan. A corporate apartment located five minutes from here, fully furnished, rent paid by the company for the next three years. All you have to do is sign, Marcus. Run my floor. Keep my vehicles safe. Keep my secrets safe."
Marcus stared at the contract. The letters blurred before his eyes. It was everything he had ever dreamed of, handed to him on a silver platter because he chose to buy a sandwich for a crying child instead of keeping his last six dollars.
"Mr. Sterling... Charles... I don't know what to say," Marcus choked out. "You're saving my life."
"No," Charles said softly, looking at Marcus with profound respect. "You saved mine the second you decided not to keep walking on that curb. Sign the papers, Marcus. Welcome to Sterling Engineering."

Marcus took the pen, his hands shaking, and signed his name. For the first time in three years, the crushing weight on his chest lifted. He looked at Jordan, who smiled up at him. They were safe.
Or so he thought.
