Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Garage

Three months passed.

Life had transformed completely for the Carters. Marcus and Jordan lived in a beautiful, sunlit two-bedroom apartment. Jordan was enrolled in an excellent private school, his walls now covered in brand-new drawings made with the finest art supplies.

At the workshop, Marcus was a revelation. He revolutionized the armoring process, developing a lightweight steel-composite weave that increased vehicle protection by 30% while reducing weight. Charles Sterling treated him like a brother, frequently inviting him and Jordan to the Alpine mansion for dinners. Lily and Jordan had become inseparable friends.

But Marcus's rapid rise did not please everyone.

Enter Victor Cross.

Victor was the Vice President of Operations at Sterling Logistics. A sleek, conniving man with slicked-back hair and a smile that never reached his cold gray eyes. Victor had been pushing his own nephew for the Chief Engineer position before Marcus arrived. He saw Marcus as an uneducated, street-level interloper who had tricked the CEO through a lucky act of charity.

One Tuesday evening, Marcus was working late in the facility, calibrating the engine of a custom-built armored SUV destined for the Prime Minister of a European nation. The vehicle was scheduled for delivery the next morning.

Marcus wiped his brow, satisfied with the engine's performance. He locked up his toolbox and left the facility at 10:00 PM.

An hour later, a shadow slipped out of the supervisor's booth. It was Victor Cross. He approached the Prime Minister's SUV, a cruel smile on his face. He opened the hood, pulled a small, specialized electronic jamming device from his pocket, and spliced it directly into the vehicle's primary braking and steering control module.

The next morning, the facility was thrown into complete chaos.

Marcus arrived at 8:00 AM to find the workshop crawling with corporate security and federal agents. Charles Sterling was standing near the European Prime Minister’s SUV, his face dark with fury and betrayal. Victor Cross stood right beside him, looking vindicated.

"Marcus! Get over here right now!" Charles bellowed, his voice echoing off the steel beams of the garage.

Marcus walked over, his heart sinking into his stomach. "What's going on, Charles?"

Victor stepped forward, holding a tablet displaying a diagnostic report. "What’s going on, Mr. Carter, is that a routine pre-delivery inspection revealed a highly sophisticated sabotage device wired directly into the main control module of this vehicle. If this SUV had gone out, the brakes would have failed completely at 60 miles per hour, locked the steering, and disabled the bulletproof glass deployment."

Marcus gasped. "What? That’s impossible! I checked that module myself last night before I left. It was perfect!"

"Oh, really?" Victor sneered. "Because the security logs show that you were the last person in this bay last night. And when we searched the locker room ten minutes ago..." Victor nodded to a security guard, who placed a heavy black duffel bag on the hood of the car.

The guard unzipped it. Inside were stacks of hundred-dollar bills—totaling at least fifty thousand dollars—alongside schematics of Sterling's proprietary armor plating.

"We found this hidden in your personal locker, Marcus," Victor said, his voice dripping with venom. "It seems our street-mechanic savior isn't a hero after all. He’s a corporate spy, selling out the company to the highest bidder, just like his predecessor."

Marcus looked at Charles, desperation tearing through him. "Charles! You have to believe me! I don't know anything about that money! I didn't touch that car after my final calibration! I am being framed!"

Charles looked at the money, then at the diagnostic report, and finally at Marcus. The trust that had built up over the last three months seemed to shatter in an instant. Charles looked deeply hurt, his green eyes cold.

"The evidence is clear, Marcus," Charles said, his voice dangerously quiet. "The logs don't lie. The locker doesn't lie. I gave you everything. I trusted you with my company, with my family. Security, escort Mr. Carter out of the building. We will let the FBI handle the investigation from here."

"Charles, please!" Marcus screamed as two large guards grabbed his arms, pinning them behind his back. Victor Cross stood in the background, a look of absolute, triumphant malice plastered across his face.

Marcus was dragged out of the facility, his world collapsing for the second time.
