CHAPTER 1 — THE DOG TAG THAT STOPPED AN ENTIRE BALLROOM

"Nobody leaves."

General Arthur Sterling's voice thundered through the grand ballroom.

The orchestra stopped playing.

The waiters froze.

Even the champagne glasses seemed to stop clinking.

Captain Mark Lawson had never seen a four-star general look afraid before.

Yet the color had completely drained from Sterling's face.

His shaking hand reached toward the weathered dog tag lying beside the shattered crystal.

"...Impossible..."

The old general knelt—not before an officer...

...but before Clara.

Gasps rippled through the ballroom.

A four-star general...

kneeling before the pregnant wife everyone had just watched being humiliated.

Mark forced out a nervous laugh.

"Sir... that's just some old junk she carries around."

Sterling slowly turned his head.

The look in his eyes was enough to make three colonels instinctively step backward.

"If you speak again without permission..."

his voice dropped to a deadly whisper,

"...your career will end before sunrise."

Silence.

Sterling carefully picked up the scratched tag.

On its surface was almost nothing left.

Only one name.

One blood type.

One military number.

And beneath decades of scratches...

one tiny engraving.

NEVER LEAVE A MAN BEHIND.

The general closed his eyes.

"I buried this man thirty years ago..."

Every officer stared.

Mark frowned.

"What man?"

Sterling ignored him.

Instead he looked gently at Clara.

"Young lady...

who gave you this?"

Clara hesitated.

"My grandfather."

The room became so quiet everyone could hear someone drop a fork.

"My grandfather raised me after my parents died."

"What was his name?"

"Samuel Brooks."

Several retired officers near the front suddenly stood.

One elderly colonel covered his mouth.

"No..."

Another whispered,

"Ghost Company..."

Sterling's breathing became uneven.

"Samuel Brooks..."

"He wasn't just your grandfather."

"He was my commanding officer."

A murmur swept across the ballroom.

The legendary Ghost Company.

The classified rescue unit officially erased from military history after a mission no government had ever acknowledged.

Mark rolled his eyes.

"Sir, with respect..."

"You expect us to believe this waitress-looking woman is related to some war hero?"

The slap echoed across the ballroom before anyone realized what had happened.

General Sterling himself had struck Captain Lawson across the face.

The room gasped.

"You insolent fool."

"You just insulted the daughter of the man who saved every life in this room..."

including mine.

Mark staggered backward.

"...What?"

Sterling held up the dog tag.

"This..."

"is not Samuel Brooks' identification."

"It belongs to someone who died protecting him."

Clara looked confused.

"My grandfather told me never to lose it."

"He said one day..."

"...someone would recognize it."

Sterling's hands trembled.

"He knew..."

"He knew this day would eventually come."

The general looked around the ballroom.

"Lock every exit."

"Military Police."

"Bring me every personnel file Captain Lawson has ever touched."

Mark suddenly laughed.

"Sir...this is ridiculous."

"My wife is emotional."

"She's pregnant."

"She's confused."

Sterling slowly turned.

"No, Captain."

"The confused one..."

"...is you."

May you like

Because you have absolutely no idea...

who you married.
