CHAPTER 5 THE INVESTIGATORS OPENED ONE OLD SAFE… AND DISCOVERED A SECRET THAT HAD BEEN HIDDEN FOR TWENTY YEARS

Federal investigators returned to the mansion with another search warrant.

This time they weren't looking for cash.

They were looking for documents from twenty years earlier.

Hidden behind an old painting in Charles's private study was a steel safe.

Inside were property deeds.

Insurance policies.

Letters.

And a faded envelope labeled:

"Mercer Estate – Confidential."

Rachel carefully opened it.

Inside lay handwritten agreements signed by Evelyn's grandfather and Charles Hawthorne decades before.

Charles admitted the truth.

"When Hawthorne Development was collapsing... your grandfather saved us."

Rachel looked up.

"With what?"

Charles answered quietly.

"Everything he had."

The room froze.

"He invested almost his entire fortune."

Rachel continued reading.

There was one final clause.

If any Hawthorne family member intentionally harmed or financially exploited a Mercer heir...

Control of the company would immediately transfer to the Mercer Trust.

Rachel slowly looked toward Evelyn.

"They triggered the clause themselves."

Evelyn felt her knees weaken.

All those years...

Her grandfather had already protected her.

Even after his death.

Margaret suddenly laughed from across the room.

"You think you've won?"

Everyone turned toward her.

"You only inherited a company drowning in hidden debt."

Rachel narrowed her eyes.

"What debt?"

Margaret smiled.

"The debt you haven't found yet."

Those words changed everything.

Because if she was telling the truth...

The company Evelyn had just inherited might already be on the edge of bankruptcy.

That night Evelyn couldn't sleep.

She watched Lily breathing peacefully beside her.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice whispered,

"Don't trust the financial reports."

"Who is this?"

"You'll know tomorrow."

The call ended.

Evelyn stared at the dark screen.

May you like

Someone else knew the truth.

Someone inside the company.
