CHAPTER 1 — THE PERFECT HUSBAND'S DEADLY SECRET

Everyone believed Ethan Carter was the perfect husband.

He brought flowers home every Friday.

He kissed his wife goodbye every morning.

He donated to charities, smiled at neighbors, and never forgot anniversaries.

On social media, they looked like the happiest couple in America.

But behind the expensive smiles...

Ethan had already decided his wife had to die.

Not because he hated her.

Because she was worth twenty million dollars.

Claire Carter was the founder of a successful cybersecurity company that had recently been acquired for hundreds of millions of dollars. Although the company no longer belonged to her, she still held valuable shares and owned several luxury properties across the country.

Months earlier, Ethan had quietly convinced Claire to purchase an enormous life insurance policy.

"It will protect our future," he had whispered while holding her hand.

She smiled.

She trusted him.

She signed every document without reading the fine print.

That signature became the beginning of his nightmare.

Unknown to Claire, Ethan had accumulated millions in gambling debt after secretly investing with dangerous loan sharks. Every failed investment pushed him deeper into a hole he couldn't escape.

The collectors had stopped asking politely.

Now they demanded payment.

Or blood.

One evening Ethan met a man named Victor inside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town.

Victor wasn't a hitman.

He was worse.

He specialized in making murders look like tragic accidents.

Car crashes.

Boat sinkings.

Mountain falls.

House fires.

Insurance companies rarely questioned his work.

Victor spread photographs across an old wooden table.

"Which ending do you prefer?" he asked calmly.

Ethan studied them.

His finger stopped on a mountain road beside a cliff overlooking the ocean.

"A brake failure," Victor smiled.

"Classic."

Three weeks later Ethan surprised Claire with an anniversary trip.

She cried with happiness.

"You planned all this?"

He kissed her forehead.

"You deserve the world."

Luxury hotel.

Private helicopter.

Ocean-view restaurant.

Sunset drive.

Everything was perfect.

Except none of it had been planned to celebrate love.

Every reservation had been designed to establish an alibi.

The final stop was an isolated scenic overlook where almost nobody visited after sunset.

As the orange sky faded into darkness, Ethan parked near the cliff.

Claire leaned against the guardrail, admiring the crashing waves below.

"This is beautiful..."

She never heard Ethan walking behind her.

His hands slowly reached forward.

One powerful shove.

Her terrified scream disappeared into the crashing ocean far below.

Ethan waited several seconds.

Silence.

No movement.

No witnesses.

He forced tears into his eyes before dialing emergency services.

"My wife..."

"My brakes failed..."

"She slipped..."

"I tried to save her..."

The entire nation mourned the beautiful young entrepreneur.

Television stations aired emotional tributes.

Friends praised Ethan for surviving such terrible trauma.

At the funeral, Ethan collapsed beside the coffin.

Everyone believed his tears.

Except one woman standing quietly beneath a black umbrella.

Detective Rachel Morgan.

She wasn't watching the funeral.

She was watching Ethan.

Because something about his grief looked rehearsed.

And buried inside Claire's office was a small encrypted file scheduled to unlock exactly seventy-two hours after her death...

A file Ethan didn't know existed.

By the time it opened...

His perfect murder would already be falling apart.
