CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET UNDER THE ASHES

For the first time in five years, Ethan heard laughter inside his home.
His daughter, Lily, ran across the penthouse holding her worn teddy bear, while Olivia stood by the window, watching the city like a woman who had survived hell and still didn’t know if peace was real.
But peace lasted only one night.
The next morning, Ethan received a black envelope.
No stamp.
No sender.
Inside was a single burned photograph.
It showed Olivia standing outside the burning house five years ago.
But she wasn’t alone.
Behind her was Ethan’s mother.
Eleanor Carter.
The woman who had cried at Olivia’s funeral.
The woman who had held Ethan’s hand at the cemetery.
The woman who had told him, “You must move on.”
Ethan’s hands shook as he turned the photo over.
On the back, someone had written:
“Victor didn’t start the fire. Your family did.”
Olivia’s face turned pale.
“I knew there was someone else,” she whispered. “But I never knew who.”
That night, Ethan confronted Eleanor at the family estate.
At first, she denied everything.
Then Ethan placed the burned photograph on the table.
Eleanor’s mask finally cracked.
“She was going to take you away from us,” she said coldly. “Your father built this empire. I wasn’t going to let some girl inherit half of it.”
Ethan stepped back like he had been slapped.
“You tried to kill my wife.”
Eleanor smiled through her tears.
“No. I tried to save my son.”
Before Ethan could answer, police lights flooded the windows.
Olivia had been recording everything.
Eleanor turned toward her slowly.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Olivia held Lily close and replied,
“And you should have stayed human.”
But just as Eleanor was dragged away, she laughed.
“You still don’t know the worst part.”
Ethan froze.
“What worst part?”
Eleanor looked at Lily.
Then at Ethan.

And whispered,
“That child is not the only one.”
