CHAPTER 2 – "The Baby Who Shouldn't Exist"

The entire square fell silent.

The police stared at the old man in disbelief.

"What do you mean you buried it?"

His hands trembled as he gently lifted the bracelet.

"I bought this the day my daughter was born."

"It was the only thing that survived the fire..."

His voice cracked.

"She died holding it."

Twenty-three years earlier, his wife and infant daughter had supposedly died in a devastating house fire.

Only ashes had been recovered.

Only the bracelet had remained.

He buried it with an empty coffin because there was nothing else left.

Or so everyone believed.

The officers immediately checked the bracelet.

Inside was a tiny engraving.

"Emily – Forever Daddy's Girl."

Exactly as the old man had described.

Just then, another police unit radioed in.

"We've found the teenage boy."

Everyone expected relief.

Instead...

The officer's voice shook.

"The boy says he doesn't know who the baby's parents are."

"He found her outside an abandoned church..."

"...with a handwritten note."

The detective slowly unfolded the paper.

Every eye in the square fixed on the faded ink.

It read:

"If Richard Hayes is still alive... tell him his daughter never died."

The old man dropped to his knees.

He had spent twenty-three years blaming himself for failing to save his family.

But the fire...

Had never taken his daughter.

Someone had stolen her.

And now...

The sleeping baby in his arms wasn't just an abandoned child.

DNA results arrived forty-eight hours later.

The impossible became reality.

The baby wasn't his granddaughter.

She was...

His daughter's newborn child.

Which meant only one thing.

Somewhere...

After twenty-three years of silence...

May you like

His daughter was still alive.

And someone had gone to unimaginable lengths to make sure no one ever found her.
