CHAPTER 4 – The Brother's Final Lie

Richard never blinked.
His younger brother, Victor Hayes, stood only a few feet away, wearing the same calm smile he'd worn at the funeral twenty-three years earlier.
"I warned Emily this day would come," Victor said softly.
"I knew she'd eventually run back to you."
Hospital security rushed toward them.
Victor simply raised his hands and smiled.
"I'm just visiting my brother."
Without a single piece of evidence, the police had no reason to arrest him.
He walked away.
But before stepping into the elevator, he whispered something only Richard could hear.
"You'll lose her again."
That night...
The hospital went into complete lockdown.
Emily's baby had vanished.
Richard's heart nearly stopped.
Doctors searched every room.
Nurses checked every floor.
Police sealed every exit.
Nothing.
Then Richard remembered the second bracelet.
Inside it had been more than an apology.
Tiny scratches lined the inner edge.
Not random scratches.
A code.
One detective enlarged the image on a computer.
The scratches formed GPS coordinates.
They pointed to an abandoned children's home nearly fifty miles outside the city.
A SWAT team surrounded the building before dawn.
Inside, they found dozens of old files.
Every file belonged to children officially listed as dead...
...but secretly sold to wealthy families under new identities.
Emily's name was among them.
She had been only six months old when Victor arranged the fire and paid a corrupt doctor to declare her dead.
The officers continued searching.
Then someone screamed.
"We found the baby!"
Richard rushed downstairs.
The newborn was safe inside a hidden nursery.
But Emily wasn't there.
Instead, taped to the crib was a video recorder.
Richard pressed PLAY.
Emily appeared on the screen, bruised and exhausted.
"If you're watching this, Dad... I probably don't have much time."
"They've been hunting me ever since I escaped."
"I couldn't let them take my daughter too."
Tears streamed down Richard's face.
Then Emily looked directly into the camera and whispered the words that shattered everyone in the room.
"Victor didn't work alone."
"There was another person."
"The one who planned everything."
"The one everyone trusts."
Before she could say the name...
A gunshot echoed off-camera.
The screen went black.
Seconds later...
Every phone in the command center rang at once.
A detective answered.
His face drained of color.
He slowly looked at Richard.
"They found Emily..."
Richard grabbed the detective's arm.
"Is she alive?"
The detective couldn't speak.
Instead...
He handed Richard a photograph taken only minutes earlier.
Richard stared at it...
And his knees gave out.
Emily was lying unconscious in an ambulance.
Standing beside her...
Holding her hand...
Was the very detective who had been leading the investigation from the beginning.
May you like
And he wasn't trying to save her.
He was smiling.
